What Sealant to use for Differential?

+1 for Gear Oil RTV. It's a dead-ringer for Hondabond, which is another awesome sealant.

I have used it on plenty of diffs and still haven't found a drop of Severe Gear anywhere.
 
They make an RTV strictly for differentials. Grey I believe.

I've never used a gasket before.

+1 The Right Stuff is the best. Permatex Ultra Black also works well, but you have to give it some time to cure.
 
Is there anything that would work for a differential cover, an oil pan gasket (two spots need it according to FSM) and a crank bearing cap?

The OEMs, at least here, don't make a gasket for a lot of the diff covers. There are gaskets in the aftermarket, some are junk, some are really good.

From the factory, it had a orange RTV type of stuff.

They used approx. 5 or 6 tubes of the stuff. Seriously ... way more than I would have used.
 
I used the same sealant the OP used on mom's 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but I always let the car sit still overnight. It never developed a leak.
 
What I have found "wrong" with a lot of diff gaskets, is that the lack of an adhesive between the surfaces allows corrosion to steadily creep into the lip of the diff cover, and work its way inward.

I'll never close another diff without a decent bead of RTV squishing out from between the cover and body.

I have always used the blue rtv and never had a problem. Never knew they made it specifically for gear oil.

They must have changed the stuff. The last tube I bought of it said you were supposed to wait 24 hours before putting the fluid in and I could swear it used to say you only had to wait an hour.
 
Well, used the ultra black and it sealed up!

Let it cure for a few hours then added in the gear oil. Didn't drive it until this morning.

The Permatex #2 had not cured at all - nearly a week later!
 
The gray Permatex diff sealant worked great when I used it last year.

The key for any RTV is the surfaces must be completely free of any grease. It won't cure or adhere properly if there's any grease or oil on the sealing surface. Clean everything carefully a couple of times with something like brake cleaner. Let the metal dry, apply the goo, put on the cover, then let it cure 24 hours before adding oil.

That has always worked for me.
 
I used ultra black on my front and rear differentials a couple years ago. The rear diff has been dry but the front evidently didn't seal right as it's slightly wet around the bottom half.

My guess is unless you dab up all of the remaining oil inside there will always be a slight bit that tries to dribble out onto the flange. Probably more in my case because the truck was on an incline with the front being lower. The front diff is not exactly easy to do either.
