What Sealant to use for Differential?

After a brief flirtation recently to try out the "new" silicone's, I came to my senses and returned to proper gasket dressings. That is, product to dress the paper or cork or whatever material gasket. Permatex does make the proper product, and it is not RTF. Permatex 85420 Fuel resistant gasket dressing & sealant. A light but thorough coating, and about as close to zero cure time as you will get. Easier to get a thin and even coat with the Permatex over hylomar.

I use the black "Right Stuff" for most sealing apps, including differential covers. I always wipe the excess oil out to ensure that none will drool down onto the sealing surface. Both the housing and the cover are always cleaned down to bright, shiny metal and wiped clean with a residue free cleaner. I apply a uniform 1/8" to 3/16" bead which loops around the bolt holes of the cover and works very well. It is just enough that a little extra squeezes out when the bolts are tightened. Never had a leak.
