What oil filter to go with?

If OP is only getting 8k km per year, it may be overkill to be overkill to change at 6 mos, but he doesn’t have a used oil analysis to tell him what’s going on with the oil. It’s likely he’s fine, but if he’s concerned and doesn’t want to pay for used oil analysis, short changes are a safe bet.
More like 10-14k/year, but less than 8k in 6 months.
OP, even at 6 mo intervals on the oil, any “brand name” filter should be good to go; you could simply drain the oil, leave the filter, and refill the sump with new oil. Have you considered just a single used oil analysis on your oil at the 12mo/8k km point to make sure your oil choice is properly protecting your engine? I do agree with Jimmy that you could likely save yourself some time and money if the used oil analysis shows the oil is still in grade and there is no contamination, antifreeze, or excessive fuel.
used oil analysis in Canada are hard to find (and expensive), otherwise i would love to do one for interest sake.
If they have gotten cheaper in recent years that would be great.
Good luck on the filters; even the current Mobil 1 you’re using should be good out to ~32k km (conversion?) but obviously finer filtering will result in cleaner oil and ultimately less wear.
Mostly its the price doubling thats concerning and if i can do better filtering than 30 microns and for a lower price that would be nice.

Why not... I think that people way overthink oil filters... The Fram Ultra will work just fine and keep your engine clean...Fram has been around for years...
People could argue this forum overthinks oil.
I'm just asking for a better filter and preferably a better price.

The "second tier" filters are the best filtration for the dollar proposition up here. Fram Tough Guard, Motomaster OE, Napa Gold. The higher end filters like the Ultra are fine, but really overkill on a six month, 7-8k km OCI.

Keep in mind the OEM filters from Toyota, Honda, Subaru etc are "cheap" filters roughly in line with the Fram Extra Guard. There are millions of vehicles that go hundreds of thousands of km with those basic filters. A filter being say 94% at 20 micron vs another at 99% really seems to make very little difference in the real world. The better filters are really meant for people who are extending their OCI.

I stick by my earlier recommendation of a basic filter at 6 month intervals and a better (not necessarily premium) filter at 12 month intervals.

Since you were using the Mobil 1 the video below might be of interest - but the supertech may also have changed since.

Fram Ultra and Toughguard are 20um @ 99% and are the cheapest filters at that rating I have found. There are a few differences between them but there both rated at the same for filtering.

I used to do the wix rock catchers but the OP is already unhappy the Mobil 1 is 99%@30um. He would be really unhappy with a wix rock catcher.
The non-XP filters are around the 95%@20u efficiency mark for most of the normal sizes, and with cost less than half of the Mobil filters (especially on Spring/Fall sales), it’s not a bad value proposition for such short OCIs.

Part of arguing and debating about oil filters is the filtering performance ... it is a filter's main job to filter, so that seems to be simething each buyer needs to decide what they want for filtering performance.

What level of filtration do you want? Once you establish that, then look at the options available to you. When other things like construction, cost, availability, OCI, etc come into play (if those are factors for you), then the oprions will decrease.

As others have said, if you're doing 5K mile OCIs, a filter like a Fram PH (Extra Guard) or a regular WIX at 95% @ 20μ would be fine. If you're going longer OCIs or just want better filtration, then go with something thats 99% @ 20μ like a Fram TG or the Ultra if you want the metal end caps instead.

Right on. Just use the Denso oil filter Toyota calls for.

If their top of the line XP is 60% at 20um, then how can their next down be 95%? Not saying it isn't - I would however be very interested in such a filter but have been lead to believe its something else.

I tried a Mobil 1 just for the heck of it and on sale for $9, and had to buy another cap wrench as it had I think 1 more flute lol

But generally I like WIX XP (they may have changed the name)...

Wix never says their XP line is their best filtration, just their best construction. If you look at Wix’s site, they don’t even publish beta numbers (even though they don’t use industry standard calculations anyways). Almost all of their cellulose filters have beta ratios and nominal micron ratings.

WIX still does publish beta numbers (ie, the efficiency) on some of their filters. WIX just uses their own beta format that doesn't look like the standard industry format of showing beta ratio info.

This is the format WIX uses for beta ratio: Beta Ratio: 2/20=6/20
This is 50% @ 6u and 95% @ 20u.

There is no beta ratio info on the WIX XP because it's "proprietary" per WIX. What's so "proprietary" about an oil filter's efficiency? Andrew's ISO testing tells you why it's "proprietary". 😄
