For years I have been using Nikon aviator sunglasses. The first pair got stolen along with a few thousand dollars worth of photo equipment in a robbery. Then I bought another pair of the same model in the late '90s. At that time they cost almost $300. Those glasses had a double gradient mirror coating (removes glare from road/water/sky), contrast enhancing dydimium filtration (enhances red and improves contrast between colors: see deer among foliage etc, zaps haze), they were polarized (removes glare and haze) and photochromic (super-responsive tint, 15-85%) with a hydrophobic coating (water and fog repellent). They were the best driving pilot's, fishing, hunting sunglasses you could get. Better than Serengeti, Bollé, Zeiss, Rodenstock, whatever. Those glasses were total overkill, not to mention they have been totally impossible to get new for at least five years, because Nikon stopped making them and began cranking out fashiony junk instead. Nobody else makes glasses with all those features. Some time last year those glasses got destroyed in an unfortunate scuffle. I've been looking for the particular model new or used, on ebay etc for almost a year. A week ago a guy offered a NOS pair for $50 on craigslist! I got them yesterday. They are totally pristine, still in the original case. I'm back, baby!
