I've got a n52, oil hungry stage 1 n63tu, n20 and a B58. This last round I ran mobile 1 0W40 and the oil consumption seemed higher than Castrol 5w40 in the n52 and n63tu. Really only want to have to stock 1 oil but i could see maybe 2.

Everything in this list is available without much pain and for less than $30 for 5 quarts. Pennzoil didnt make the list because its around $48 for 6.

Mobile 1 Euro 0w40
Mobile 1 Euro 5w40
Castrol Edge Euro 0w40
Castrol Edge Euro 5w40
Quaker State Euro 5w40
Valvoline Euro 5w40
Mobile 1 ESP 5W-30

iirc, M1 ESP 5W-30 has LL-04 and not LL-01.

I mix up my LLs. Is LL-04 > LL-01?
What about LL Cool J? Heat transfer should better with LL Cool J.

I ask because OP wants LL-01 but he listed M1 ESP.

Either one is fine.

Since he can find ESP 5W-30 "without much pain", I assume he can or should add M1 ESP 0W-30 to his list as well since they hang out together at least based on my experience at the store. And it is supposed to be a better choice. We had a recent thread about that.

M1 ESP 0W-30 doesnt carry a LL01 or LL04 so it didnt make my list. Only the 5W-30 appears to carry LL04.

Went with the castrol 0w-40 this time around.

I am curious why BMW hasnt approved LL04 for the US. I poked around a bit and it looks like 10ppm is the target but there still exists a credit system in the US where fuel suppliers can go over by burning credits. I wonder if BMW isnt comfortable with this vs a hard limit. IE in 2023 ~56billion gallons on the market were above 10ppm and 70.2 billion were below. Perhaps you can have a issue with LLO4 oil if you are in a spot in the market where the higher sulfur fuel ends up.

also stumbled across a summary in this article that explains that low sulfur fuel is driving part of the cost spread increase we have been seeing between premium and regular.

Here's what you need for your fleet, Castrol Euro; BMW LL-01 and MB 229.5 approvals. My supply of 0W-30 and 0W-40, plus some other fluids for drivetrains and OPE. 0W-30 is the quart bottles, 0W-40 is the jugs.

For our BMWs I put in 5 quarts of 0W-40 plus 2 quarts of 0W-30, the VR6 gets 5 quarts of 0W-40 plus 1 quart of 0W-30. The Honda gets 100% 0W-30.

I'm a bit surprised how much of the mogas supply is above 10ppm,
There used to be an absolute max of 30ppm, credits not withstanding? Anyone know if this is the case?

I'm using an LL04 in my B46, and typically changing oil every 12-15 mos and well under 5,000 miles. I assume this is 'safe'.

Wow finally someone gets a new bottle of the 0W-30 with the orange/peach label.
The bottle says it's Made in USA of foreign and domestic components. Latest MSDS (April 2025) shows it's still 25% to 50% PAO, just like it has been for a very long time.

I've been using it long enough that the first stuff I bought was Made in Germany. Probably 10 years later production moved to Belgium. And, now, after another 6 or 7 years in Belgium, it's now Made in USA. Ever since they stopped producing the original green colored "German Castrol", it's my belief that "German Castrol" has been pretty much the same brew since then - and I'm happy about that.

FWIW,

Scott
