I have a 2008 Ford Fusion v6 and the Transmission drain plug does not appear to have the standard hex threads. Instead, it has a cross or a "T" like pattern that I have never seen. Anyone know what kind of plug this is or what tool it takes to loosen it for a fluid change?

I don't know what hex threads are...threads are usually, well, threads on a cylinder...but if you mean the head of the plug, then, no, I've not seen one...

But a picture sure would help...

shouldn't be. I use a T55 torx on mine and it does just fine. It should be either a 3/8 or 10mm hex. The 10mm hex I had did not fit in mine though so I use the T55.

Bear in mind that if it's a torx looking head, Ford uses a lot of Torx Plus heads which require Torx Plus bits. Often a Torx bit will work, but you run the chance of breaking the bit or stripping the bolt if it doesn't come out easily. To someone that hasn't seen first hand the differences between torx and torx plus, it's difficult to readily determine which it is.

A Torx variant, Torx Plus, introduced about 1990 when the original Torx patent was expiring, is designed to allow greater torque, and to minimize wear. The specifications for these licenses are held by Textron. Standard Torx drivers can be used to drive Torx Plus screws, but not to full torque because of the loose fit. Torx Plus drivers will not fit standard Torx screws. They are shortened to "Torx TX".

So when the Mrs. asks why I need more tools, I have an answer....
