What Kind of Car Did You Learn Stick Shift On?

First time was on a 1988 Mitsu pickup (dodge ram 50). It has no tach and you had to "feel" the engine lug to downshift or the vibrations in the floorboard or pedal. Continued practicing on a 1990 toyota 4runner, 1992 F250 with "stage 5 clutch" and 1997 F250 with granny first gear.

1953 Dodge PU with a three speed. My sister learned in a 51 plymouth station wagon that Dad had put a clutch and pressure plate in. By the time she was done he had to do again. My wife learned in a 72 Toyota Corolla that I had changed from auto to 4 speed. She did fairly decent, but by the time we got rid of it she told me that there would be no more stick shifts in her future again, and I took her at her word.

1978 Pete 359 day cab with a 425 Cummins and a 15spd affectionately named Ole number 2. It was pretty much a sink or swim deal. Every time i forgot to split the range back to low at a stop light got me punched in the shoulder. ever time i banged a gear i got punched in the leg.

I will say to this day i get comments on what a smooth shifting dude i am.

1970 ford shortbed stepside w/a 360 and 3spd electric overdrive on the column.it would boil 31 inch mud grips in first and chirp them in second.got a consistent 15 mpg.wish i still had it.got t-boned by an elderly driver and t boned by his insurance company.

The first car I shifted was a '65 GTO, from the passenger seat.

The first real lesson came in my bud's Dad's '69 Chevy pickup.

Then there was my sister's boyfriend's '64 Ford truck.

Then there was this farmer's hay truck I had to drive since I was the only one of the crew that had actually driven a stick.

I learned how to drive a manual trans on my '84 IT200 dirtbike. My first real manual car experience came when one of my older friends and I went "car shopping" one day... He could drive stick and the first place we went had a turbo firefly... So I learned on that in a parking lot. I stalled it a couple times so my buddy told me to drive it like my dirtbike... I think I took a few miles off the tires and clutch but after a few trys I could launch it pretty good

I learned to really drive a standard well when my girlfriend got a 92 Sentra, I learned to do heel and toe rev matching downshifts and to shift quickly. If I had a choice I'd never get an automatic again but there are fewer cars every year with manuals available.

Mine was a 1960! It probably wasn't as bad as it seemed, but it felt like I was there for 20 minutes before I had moved 15 feet without bucking and jerking.

1970 Ford F-350 flatbed that my dad had on the farm. I drove it in the hay field when I was about 10 years old (1972). We sneaked and went thru the gears on the old county road I lived on.

I learned stick on family's 54 Plymouth. First in driveway at 15 and then took drivers test at 16. First car 51 Plymouth with stick. Bought another 51 Plymouth in 1985. It really made me realize how slow and polluting the cars of that era were.

1953 (or maybe 1954) Massey Harris 30 tractor. Red sports model - four on the floor, open top, etc. And with those individual rear wheel brakes you could really turn tight!
