What is Your Severe Service Oil Interval?

For those interested, this was a typical OEM definition of severe service when we actually had viscosity charts. My 2013 Subaru Forester manual still allows 0W-20, 5W-30, and 5W-40. In 2014 the manual was changed to 0W-20 with no other options.

A, F, and K always get us. Texas in any major metro area will likely see these regularly and especially F.

8000 Kilometers. and it is the recommended interval by all dealers i know. vehicle is a 2024 Mazda CX-5 Signature 2.5T engine. i am already at more than 77 000 Kilometers on the Odometer. i drive on average 65 000 Kilometers a year. when i changed the spark plugs at 62 000 kilometers like Mazda recommend, they looked like new. it is the first vehicle i intend to keep 6 years. i usually trade in every year or two. i am curious to see if it can make 500 000 Kilometers with good maintenance. even with severe Winter weather every year. max OCI permitted in the owner's manual for this vehicle is 12 000 kilometers. with the quality of lubricants we have today, i think a well maintained vehicle can last close to forever. especially if it is driven regularly. we'll see how far i can go.
What do you do for work that requires that much driving?!
Seeing you are also in Canada, the main issue to achieving your goal of 500kms is rust.
If I were in your position, I'd at least perform an annual fluid film coating on all the undercarriage and suspension components.

My 2022 GMC Canyon doesn’t really have a severe service schedule, but the OLM is approx 7500 miles so I would say 4K miles is my severe service oci

i am retired. and i travel a lot. and yes i do annual film coating every year. they even put coating in the engine bay.

I go 3000mi on the wife's 2018 Honda Accord 1.5 GDI-Turbo engine because it is one of those that gets some fuel in the oil.
I go 5000mi on my 2009 Honda Accord 2.4 engine. No complaints or reasons I could not really stretch it to 7500mi if I wanted.
I put so few miles on the 2009 that often I end up changing it before because I have not put 5000mi in 12mo on it.

My Tundra has the flex fuel engine. All the intervals are cut in half. So, regular service is 5,000 miles.

Severe service is 2,500.

But hey, it’s cheap insurance, right? So, I was thinking, maybe I would cut it down to 500 miles.

You can never have too much cheap insurance!! ;)

55 gallon drum in the bed plumbed to the fill cap and crack the drain plug juuuust a hair.

Tundra sees 5K oil changes.
Rav4 Hybrid gets 4K oil changes. Dont like the smell of fuel in the oil.
Wifes Subaru gets 4K oil changes. The timing chains on the FB25 beat up the oil.

1998 Buick LeSabre car book states severe service 3 months or 3,000 miles whichever comes first. Up till last year I was doing 3,200 miles in 6 months. By 3,000 mile mark oil on dipstick turns black,200 more miles thick black.
Ight now, am doing about 3,200 in 8 months. Twice week I take car city drive but for 24-30 miles around. So oil operating temp..helps keep oil longer brown amber colored.
When I got my license 1992, drive 83 Buick century..Dad just got Saturn sl1 or 2 don't remember.thatcwas given Mobil 1.
Century got Mobil drive clean reg oil..as I put 1,700-2,400 miles in 6 months.the saturn had less mileage..but my dad liked drive clean, extra detergents.he also used 93 octane Mobil, extra detergents.. 3,000 miles in
Had oil changed both cars every 6 months regardless.chrap insurance...
Today ,I realize it was gross waste of oil.
They left oil filter on, but changed the oil, local Mobil gas station shop.then

My Prius V is driven mostly in town. The vvti begins to get noisy around 3,000 miles on an oil change. I have found that Castrol Edge 5-30 keeps it quiet much better than M1 products ever did. 3000 miles on this car is around 6 months for us. On the other hand, my Sienna is happy with any M1 oil I put in it it seems.

I have a RAM 1500 on factory order. It's powered by a 3 liter twin turbo 6 making 420 HP. Naturally for this group, I downloaded the owners manual. The severe service interval is 4000 miles. My plan is 4 months/4000 miles with PUP and whatever filter the dealer sells me. At least at first. Maybe at some point I will learn to trust the OLM and change it when the truck says to.

My average speed accounting for stopped time is 23 mph in the NYC area so I do 3000 mile intervals with the standard Wix filter which Wix touts as "balanced". The Wix filter is better than the Motorcraft version and cheap at around 5 dollars on Rockauto. There is a lot of idle time especially in the winter.

The oil used is either Valvoline, Castrol or Mobil Euro 5W40...whichever is cheapest.

Catch can installed.

Engine flush done every 30000 miles with Liqui Moly flush product.

Lincoln Navigator, 3.5 liter V6 Ecoboost

2015 and 2016 Hyundai Gamma 1.6 Turbo engines get oil every 3,500 to 4,000. Synthetic 5w40 as outlined in Hyundai's TSB 14-20-001 from several years ago.

2020 Kia 3.3 v6 gets 5w30 oil every 5,000 miles.

I believe the severe service reflects every 3,750 miles in the Hyundai manual.
