I have a mixed graft citrus tree and squirrels love lemons and grapefruit. I spray vinegar laced with hot sauce every few days and it keeps the squirrels away. This works because my tree is too far for them to jump on my tree from another tree. I spray a 10-foot circle around the base of the trunk. With nearby Golden Gate Park, any attempt at trapping or eradication would be a lost battle. If you live in an area where you can use a lawn sprinkler, squirrels hate those. If you have squirrels in the garage or attic, I suggest trying capsaicin and mothballs.

Get one on these, Squirrel trap
I put seeds on top of the peanut butter. You can also put rat poison on top of the peanut butter, and that will permanently get rid of them. I've tried several sprays that promise to repel but none worked.

Gotta be careful they don't consume the poison and die in the attic in a place you cannot get to.

I had the same thing. Hear one gnawing on my siding. Spooked it, painted the scar, it returned. I started picking them off around my property on sight. Had to paint the scar one last time. The next generations never bother.

I'm an avid spring gunner. I like grouping targets more than killing.

I hate squirrels for this very reason; they chew on everything (wood on homes, trailers, vehicle wiring, etc). Rodents with bushy tails ...

- the FIRST line of defense is eliminating the route they use to get to the damaged areas. Do you have trees that overhang your home and allow an easy path to the upper areas? Deal with that first. I live in a heavily forested neighborhood and those of us who have cut back the trees and limbs from our house have far fewer problems than those who love nature hanging over their heads. I own 7 acres of a wooded lot, but there's not a tree within 50' of my house. I've never had a squirrel on my roof. I cannot stress this enough; take away their path of travel!
- Culling the animal may deal with that one, but others are likely to follow if you don't eliminate the item above
- We shoot them on site; .22lr fragmenting rounds
- trapping is more difficult; they are not stupid animals and can figure things out (usually by trial and error), but also learn from watching others
- deterrent animals (dogs, cats) also help some, but they only deter and rarely catch, and they're only reasonably effective at deterring at ground level because cats are too slow in trees (relative to the speed of a squirrel in its natural habitat) and dogs can't climb at all
- poison works, but you lose control over where they die (and rot), and more importantly risk the continuation of the poison into the next species (coyote, neighbor's cat or dog, hawks or owls, etc)

I just traded one and released it 3 miles away.
Hope it don't come back.
Only 8 more to go
