I hate squirrels for this very reason; they chew on everything (wood on homes, trailers, vehicle wiring, etc). Rodents with bushy tails ...
- the FIRST line of defense is eliminating the route they use to get to the damaged areas. Do you have trees that overhang your home and allow an easy path to the upper areas? Deal with that first. I live in a heavily forested neighborhood and those of us who have cut back the trees and limbs from our house have far fewer problems than those who love nature hanging over their heads. I own 7 acres of a wooded lot, but there's not a tree within 50' of my house. I've never had a squirrel on my roof. I cannot stress this enough; take away their path of travel!
- Culling the animal may deal with that one, but others are likely to follow if you don't eliminate the item above
- We shoot them on site; .22lr fragmenting rounds
- trapping is more difficult; they are not stupid animals and can figure things out (usually by trial and error), but also learn from watching others
- deterrent animals (dogs, cats) also help some, but they only deter and rarely catch, and they're only reasonably effective at deterring at ground level because cats are too slow in trees (relative to the speed of a squirrel in its natural habitat) and dogs can't climb at all
- poison works, but you lose control over where they die (and rot), and more importantly risk the continuation of the poison into the next species (coyote, neighbor's cat or dog, hawks or owls, etc)
