One quart is usually enough to cover the oil pick-up spout. Start the engine, idle it for a minute or so then drain.
Sounds really scary. So one quart is supposed to be enough to keep the oil pump pickup submerged AND the oil system full of oil as it's pumping??? I wouldn't do it.

even draining it hot seems bad, your best bet is to probably let it sit overnight and then drain it hours later without the engine being run.... this would give it the best chance to run down to the sump, once its there its easy to get out, cold or hot, angle or not........
Strongly disagree. Hot (thin) oil runs off engine parts better and out of the sump better. It may also carry off more crud that could otherwise settle in the sump and not drain out with the layer of cold thick oil that will remain there.
I think the idea of a perfectly clean engine is goofy. Run the full manufacturer's recommended oil drain intervals, buy good oil, and sleep well. If you plan on keeping the car over 300,000 miles, get a bypass filter.
