One quart is usually enough to cover the oil pick-up spout. Start the engine, idle it for a minute or so then drain.
Sounds really scary. So one quart is supposed to be enough to keep the oil pump pickup submerged AND the oil system full of oil as it's pumping??? I wouldn't do it.

even draining it hot seems bad, your best bet is to probably let it sit overnight and then drain it hours later without the engine being run.... this would give it the best chance to run down to the sump, once its there its easy to get out, cold or hot, angle or not........
Strongly disagree. Hot (thin) oil runs off engine parts better and out of the sump better. It may also carry off more crud that could otherwise settle in the sump and not drain out with the layer of cold thick oil that will remain there.

I think the idea of a perfectly clean engine is goofy. Run the full manufacturer's recommended oil drain intervals, buy good oil, and sleep well. If you plan on keeping the car over 300,000 miles, get a bypass filter.

This will never drain all the way.
All you can do is to wait as long as you can bear when draining the oil.
But it's OK. A quick drain or a prolonged drain won;t make any real difference in the real world.

+1 And change it while the oil is hot-warm, a reasonable interval based on driving conditions/style and owners manual recommendation, and don't sweat trying to get all oil out.

IMO there might be more wear occurred.

I wouldn't crank an engine with no oil to get a few more ounces out. Even if there is a residual layer of oil coating parts, the risk is greater than the reward. If a person is worried let the oil drain over night, and change oil more frequently. JMO

Ive been known, for years, to let my vehicles drain overnight... Ill start changing the oil after I get home from work when the engine is hot. Pull the plug, take off the oil filter. Let it drain from 5:30pm - 8am the next morning, where I go outside, put the plug back in, put on the new filter, fill with new oil.

Thats always been my overkill method!

Some silly answers here!

The internet is a virtual wealth of knowledge.

The best method: Drive your car home from work, drain the oil, go have a beer (or two) with dinner, change your filter, install new filter and oil and rest assured that enough of the dirty oil was removed to not make any difference in the long run.

I do not want to get ALL the oil out and empty the oil galleys. More harm done if you do this and a total waste of money & resources to flush with a quart or two of new fresh oil.Common sense approach needed here.

It only seems to make sense to this accountant to just change the oil more frequently once or twice until you are comfortable of having a complete change over. You could also add Seafoam or other cleaner a few miles (maybe even 100) before the first oil change for cleaning. Then run the oil for 1,000, 3,000, 500 miles, whatever, and change again.

I understand a completely drained engine has 1/2 quart or so in it that you won't get out by any conventional method.

No way I would run any auto engine with only one quart in it. Nor would I crank it empty. There are better ways to be OCD. Now excuse me while I go make sure I shut off the stove.

My dad years and years ago after he drained his oil poured diesel fuel through to wash it out so to speak. His cars ran forever.

Your Rav and Fit have overhead valve gear. This sort of head invariably traps a few cups of OLD, NASTY, DIRTY oil in the nooks and crannies (what, pray-tell is a 'cranny?') in and around the springs/lifters.

I changed mine while it was hot and poured it out of the JUG (they come in Jugs now, outside temp) into the Hot engine. Iheard a "Pop" but it may have been my imagination... Oil expands so its notlike COOLANT thatcan crack a Radiator, its OIL. So im fine mycar runs cool, even with .5 quart too much.

I know hot/warm changes have suspended particulates in them. My ATF came out AFTER my oil in my case.. but the Bubbly Pepsi did come out like Kerosene.

DONT CRANK THE ENGINE WITH NO OIL!! Tharts when MOST wear occurs. probably same amount as in 300 miles of Driving it.

PS: No idea what the "Pop was.. but everything is FINE there. Remember, i had ATF in Engine too, so that musta been the Kerosene look to the oil. Wonder what Oilyzer woulda said about it..)
