I saw Midnight Oil play a free show in Dallas right after they had their first big hits in the US, I think about 10X as many people as expected showed up and the area around the street corner where the stage was set up was totally mobbed for blocks in all directions.
The band was incredible, but things actually got a little out of hand and people started scaling the buildings in the area to watch from the rooftops. Somebody had the bright idea to throw a heavy wooden clothes hanger from a roof and it hit the girl standing next to me in the head...she went down like she had been shot and came back up crying hysterically with a bloody scalp, but she was incredibly lucky to have not been hurt even worse.
I was already a fan of the Oils from seeing videos for "Read About It" and "The Power And The Passion" in high school and bought the 10987654321 LP, but this show made me sort of obsessive about them for a few years. I bought a video of them touring aboriginal communities with the Warumpi Band that I still watch from time to time, one of the only reasons for me keeping a VCR running anymore.
The first big show I saw was Black Sabbath around 1982...I had no idea that Ozzie was no longer in the band and it sort of ruined the show for me.
