My [99] 4.6 had piston slap for over 230K miles...That was on any oil I used but the bulk of the oil was Mototcraft 5w20 Blend...No issues what so ever with it...The piston slap was only for a few seconds in the am...It did not use any oil between OCI's which were every 5K miles...I sold it to some guy who kept it a few more years cause I saw the car a few years later coming out of a local mall...The [05] 4.6 I have now has piston slap every now and then...I usually hear it more more after a oil change.

There are also planty of ones that use 5-7 quarts of oil each OCI...which is normal

Yep, seems GM had all the answers. I'm with you and won't own another GM product either.

The forum did that. That wasnt some attempt at literacy or well-versed-ness. I type in a 4 or 3 letter word, namely c--p see that one should be ok, and it says (censored) i typed that.

just another 'slapper' here.

We own a fleet of GM products. Had many a slapper until they fixed it for good in the v8's (the newer ones are super sweet and quiet now).

We have one slapper with 400k plus miles on it. No oil consumption. We have another with 285k miles.

Should we be worried?

Lets drop the iron duke stuff now okay?

My 2002 Cavalier has fairly noticeable piston slap from when I got it (55k miles) to now (137k miles). May have gotten a bit worse, but not much.

Engine still runs fine, and burns 1/2 quart every 7-8k. Never really found an oil that reduced it much.

With those motor`s it was usually the valve train or timing chain making noise.

I can vouch for this. My timing chain is silent, but on Valvoline Maxlife 10W-40 it had VERY noticable lifter tick. I used some Restore and switched to PP 5w30 and it's only a little bit noticeable for the first 10-15 minutes after starting it, and only at idle. I bet that my timing chain lasts till at least 200K miles.

When I switched from dino this past November to Mobil AFE OW-30 I immediately noticed some piston slap (metallic cluttering sound)in my Lexus GS400 but only at start-up and just for a few seconds. It only lasted for a month or so and it hasn't done it in a couple of months. I haven't treated the engine with anything. Does piston slap naturally go away?
