What happened to Havoline's popularity?

I have about 40 $1/q Havoline DS 5w-20 and will continue to use it. After trying PZ, that's what I am most likely to spend money on. Havoline DS only gets knocked off the radar due to price when people pick up a bunch of random closeout $.01c to $1 conventional or synthetic blend oil. Another nail in the DS coffin was all the BOGO and Freebate PP and SP. I suspect we will see a lot of interest in Kendall, going forward.

Since the early 80's, I had been using Havoline motor oil due to it's availability and low price. It was always on sale and had a rebate to boot. Knowing nothing about oil back then, I would use just about the cheapest oil I could buy(store brand or name brand) and try to buy the proper spec oil for the engine although I would use any oil in my vehicles just to make sure it was changed.

Today, I never see Havoline on sale at all so I don't use it. I know it's wonderful motor oil but there are other oils equally as good at a better price so, that what I use.

Havoline Synthetic is very hard to find, that is probably why it is sinking in popularity.

Usually when I see it, it is at Big Lots.

It used to be 1.00/quart at the Dollar Store, I bought it a lot back then. Then it went up some in price, then they quit carrying it, oh well.

Except for AAP none of the stores around my immediate area carry it in 5W20. Walmart has other weights but not that. AAP here has a very small section for Havoline.

2nd the shell formula - $9.99 for 5qts. and a decent proline filter at the local pep boys...I'm all about it.

Worth noting that Havoline DS 20 and 30 weights have a unique additive package from Ornite that is "sheer proof", allowing the thinnest/best in cold possible formulations. The 10w-40 and 20w-50 are relatively thick and decent for performance applications. I have Havoline DS 10w-40 in my bike for winter.

Havoline just doesn't get marketed well. It barely gets a row at Walmart. Priced the same as other premiums oils it doesn't get play.
I watch for it on clearance because then "it's a great oil."

Since Ornite is owned by Chevron, does that means Havoline and Chevron Supreme is about the same?

No, Chevron was still using the old heavy-moly formula. I believe the brands are going to 100% merge, no more Havoline. The Chevron product is then likely to adopt the DS formula. I guess the Havoline DS ad campaign failed.

IIRC, last I read, Chevron still wants to keep some of the legacy brands from Texaco. They have done some simplifying on the HDEO side, but I think they said they were going to keep Havoline PCMO going.... It was in Lubes and Greases a few issues back.

Oh, and I totally agree on the flavor of the week oils. It's great for an oil to be a bargain and turn in good performance, but to all the sudden think it's the absolute best oil you can buy for any engine and cure cancer to boot, that's getting a little silly.

Well, I don't know about cancer but Pennzoil really helps my chronic constipation. I use Yellow Bottle for constipation and Platinum for the runs. Seems to balance out ok.

Tell me about it. I used to use it in my old jeep, and when I went to walmart to get oil for the first oil change in my new jeep, I was gonna look at Havoline first, but didn't see it. The row with the oils extended down one hole wall, but didn't see it. turned around to the other side of the isle, and there it was, all by its lonesome, right next to all the fuel additives, ps fluids, and brake fluids.

I thought "Deposit Shield" sounded more like those things you put on toilet seats to protect yourself!
