Quality = better than any American brand, on par with the lower end Japanese

Safety = all the test results indicate Hyundai is near the top

Resale Value = still below the Japanese, but getting better than GM and Chrysler

Warranty = top notch. I have had zero problems with my 2005 Hyundai. Not one quibble - if it broke, they fixed it.

Many of the Hyundai and Kia are made in the US, including the Sonata.

I drove a Kia Optima for a week. I read that this is essentially a Hyundai Sonata clone.

The car was great for what I needed, a mid sized sedan. Pretty quiet, not bad gas mileage (4 cylinder), somewhat comfortable.

A new one is 25 grand, but you can get one a year old for right around 10 grand.

I would get one a year old!

Sorry, didnt mean to direct that at you or imply that your credit wasn't up to snuff. Like I said in my post, just putting it out there for information sake. No insult intended.
With my Insurance company, it makes a huge difference....up to 40% discount.

There is nothing wrong with Hyundai, unless you are worried about brand perception.

I'm willing to bet that 99% of Hyundai 'bashers' have never driven one, similar to the kind of people who bash domestics. Probably never driven them.

Hyundai is a great car manufacturer. This coming decade (2010-2020), they will be the ones to beat I think. Toyota's reign is coming to an end.

I bought my used 2008 Santa Fe in Sept 2009. I'm the 3rd owner and this vehicle started it's life as a rental. At 47Kmi on the ticker (early on it probably was flogged on), it's a sold, smooth and rattle free as new. The interior, doors, etc, took it's past life well also. I enjoy it's ease of maintenance as it's mechanicals are well laid out. Drain/fill plugs on everything, easy access. Hyundai still includes access doors under the rear seats to get at the fuel tank sending units, plus you have the resources of hmaservice.com. I dunno of any other manufacturer that does all that for you these days.

We have had/have 3 Hyundai vehicles. 2005 Tucson, 2007 Santa Fe 3.3 liter limited and a 2010 Santa Fe 3.5 liter limited.

No issues other than normal maintenance. Use 5W20 Synthetic Oil and have no complaints with fuel economy either. Wife is buying a new 2010 Tucson in a few weeks.

Hard to find one right now in the color/color of leather she wants as they are selling like hotcakes.

I have a 2009 Elantra , basic model , no frills but ryuns great easy to work on and I would rather owned it than 10 Fords or Cheys

I've given the Hyundais serious consideration. I'm interesting in test driving the Tuscon and the new Sonata. Anyone else drive these yet?

Also, anyone know what oil is spec'd for these? My oil stash might make the decision for me.

I drove the Tucson, it was nice. I was surprised they were all 4cyls now as they dropped the V6. It seemed to have adequate power. I drove the GMC Terrain right after and thought it was a much nicer vehicle, although it was about $3k more the way I wanted it equipped.

5-20, but can run 5-30. I am running 5-30 Synpower in my 2008 Kia Spectra (same as Hyundai Elantra).

You should be all set.

It just bugs me because I love Hyundai, however, I have this great consideration in American cars these days..I wish I had a milllion bucks to buy both a Hyundai car and a Dodge Ram with a Cummins.

I've driven a 2009 Sonata a lot. It is my wife's car.

It's a nice soft cruiser, too soft and wobbly for my taste.

The 4 cylinder engine is nice, and adequate, but not exciting.

The transmission is awful. Two major complaints:
- Bad flare on the 2-3 upshift, about 10% of the time, no apparent trigger conditions.
- Upshifts to 5th at 44mph without variation on throttle input, unless you're really pushing it, in which the TCC is unlocked and you're in gas guzzling mode. That upshift at 44mph takes all the wind out of the acceleration.
- This is three, I know, but the actual shifts are generally very sloppy. I've driven a few 2005-2008 Honda models and they shift much more consistently and quickly without being harsh.
- This is four now, but the TCC unlocks on every little incline, without any provocation from throttle input.

At temperatures below 40 the windshield squeaks terribly on uneven roads, unless it is wet.

Front right suspension is clunky over uneven surfaces.


I think this car has bugs (haha) but the dealer has no interest in looking into them. Car drives? No malfunction light? Leave us alone!


Regarding copying, the NF Sonata came out for MY 2006 which Toyota appeared to copy with their MY 2007 Camry. Or maybe Hyundai had spies and pulled it off before Toyota could implement their own design.

$25K? No way...my local Kia dealer has multiple "new" restyled '09 Optima LX's w/a pretty good list of standard features for $12,888 (and that price doesn't include "Farm Bureau" or "College Grad" bologna either). It's just cheap enough to pique my interest, but not my pocket book.

Yes, resale value is horrendous. But if you wanted a long-term vehicle w/10yr powertrain warranty and have a local Kia/Hyundai dealer, I think this is one of the best deals out there...

Hyundai has come a long way and does make some good stuff, nothing that really insterest me, but it looks very promising.

Haveing said that you may want to take a ride in a new Buick, Cadillac or Lincoln, because your statement makes you sound like a goof.
