What Do You Think of Mobil1 5w-50 ?

You 2 guys above need to get out more. 5W-50 is great for many European engines for everyday use and some other engines used in racing.

"I can't possibly think of a single engine which should run 5w50 in it."

Motorcraft recommends 5w50 in the Ford GT, Mobil use to advertise that 15w50 was a factory fill in some of the Mustang Cobras, 15w40/50 is evidently recommended by Ford for some of the high output Falcons available overseas, etc.

I use the Castrol 5W50 in my 67 Camaro 250 CID 6 cylinder.
It seems to work quite nicely

How about a clapped out VW/Audi 1.8/2.0? Or any clapped out German car for that matter.

But my point is, if those engines do need a 50 weight oil, they shouldn't be running 5w50, but instead should be running 15w50 or 20w50, which will have less viscosity index improvers in it to shear down.

I just don't see why the need for a 50 weight oil that is rated as a 5w on the cold end. If you're going to be running it in the colder winter time you wouldn't need it to be a 50 weight, you could then switch to a 5w40 since your oil temps wouldn't be as hot.

Good point Patman, however, the high viscosity but comparatively low HTHS is just the effect your looking for in oil burners. You want the high kinematic viscosity to prevent leakage past the valve guides and high absolute viscosity to prevent leakage past pistons/rings yet have it shear down to reasonable values in the other areas and uses in the engine. Granted, it's a patch at best, but it does seem to work in some engines.
