What do you think about forced full service gas?

It was a rental car, I have no idea how much gas it's going to take but whatever you tell me it is I'll pay!

I would have told him $175 and want every penny of it.

Back in the day when the fuel input began to be located on the passenger side, it was fun to either make the customer move the car because I couldn't reach it with the hose or...if I could reach it, to drag the hose across the trunk and spill a little...especially if they refused to move the car.

As said above, NJ's price went up .23 on Nov 1st.

I live in the woods of PA and we do our big shopping on the weekend as the nearest WalMart and other big stores are literally 25 miles away in NJ. Before this it was $1.82 in NJ and $2.59 at my house. While we were there, I'd bring every gas can I had. I'd have them fill those and didn't have to worry about them touching all my vehicles. Also I'd be out of the car doing the gas cans and could monitor the attendant.

My major gripe would be they'd hang up the nozzle at whatever it clicked off at, where my OCD would make me top it off a little to make the price to the next dollar.

I'd rather avoid it if possible. I put premium into my car since it's been chiptuned with a premium-only tune. It also has a locking gas cap from the days when gas was $4/gallon and my living situation was different. Having somebody assume I want regular and bash off a locking gas cap is a risk best not taken.

I know a(very) few folks who are terrified of filling their own gas.

10 years ago, we had two Swifty gas stations plus a real honest-to-goodness full service Marathon station. Swifty closed all their locations in the state, and the Marathon dispensed with their garage and mechanics in favor of a full convenience store.

One of my mom's friend's just turned 80 and has never in her life pumped her own gas. She drives a lot less now than she used to, so she pays her teenage neighbor to take her car and fill it up.

BTW, I'm in the camp of being one of those people who doesn't want someone else putting gas in my car. The full service stations here use to also charge a 25¢ premium, again something I don't want to pay.

Not a fan however reality of our economy is we need these kind of jobs for folks(currently).

Unskilled or narrow skilled labor unfortunately is dying away. Hopefully folks realize unemployed or coming out of high school the idea not pursuing technical training, quality college, very skilled trades, medical etc is you'll be left behind.

I worked at forced serve fuel station in college for a summer in down economy. It was a bit sad as balance of folks who did likely where not headed anywhere in life. I did learn no name brand fuel is actually ends of brand name fuel and sometimes premium. I dealt with the fuel trucks wanting to sell ends before returning to fuel depot.

My mercedes 300d lets a big-rip pump fit but sometimes I find one that only wants to do 20 gallons/min and getting the trigger at just the right, slow speed is sometimes a challenge. I "know" my own gauge and that I should be getting close at eight gallons this time, but telling an attendant this is another layer of oddness.

To be honest, I wouldn't trust the average New Jersey or Portland resident to pump gallons of highly flammable liquid. Good law. I fully support it in those areas.

Think it's been a good 5 years since the last full service pumps closed here.
There were a few "little old ladies" who got gas there - but most of the day those pumps sat idle.
That place is a quick lube now ...

As opposed to the brilliant residents of FL?

I think that for the elderly and the disabled, full serve is great.
For most of us, it simply adds to the cost and time required.
It's just so easy to hop out, swipe a card and fill your car.
I was aware that full service was required in NJ, although the hassle factor was offset by what was the much lower price of fuel there relative to surrounding states.
Didn't know that it was also the law in Oregon.
Any other states or localities that require full service and preclude self serve?

I thought it was weird in NJ but as for Portland.....I'll never set foot there. Who wants to get killed by some anarchist crybaby.

Lived in NJ my whole life. It's kind of exciting when I go out of state and have to pump my own gas. Some gas attendants are quite surly so I avoid those gas stations and stay with wawa where they are trained to be polite. People should have the freedom to pump their own gas but most people in NJ like not having to pump gas. Don't see that law changing any time soon.

I recall on the Jersey tpk. [some stupid law] not being able to pump my own, so I got out and politely asked the guy to be careful. Now I make sure I have enough gas to get through NJ. LOL

There's a lot of good reasons to make sure you have enough gas to make it through New jersey.

The people who have pumped my gas here in the Portland metro area have been fine, no issues, no scratches. Especially Costco or the local gas station in our town on the outskirts of Portland. It's a little weird at first when moving to this state but you get used to it and worry about things that actually matter. I do wonder how many people are employed by this. Must be 1000s considering all the stations and multiple attendants at each.

Edit: one news article claims about 10,000 jobs here in Oregon.

Outdated stupid laws. Pumps are fitted with breakaway hoses (everywhere) and tons of safety features (almost everywhere), there's no excuse for some high school dropout to be touching my property and obviously damaging it. Ridiculous. I'm almost tempted to move far away from Portland to some small county where you can pump your own gas after 6PM. 98% of people probably don't care about someone else touching their stuff, but I do.

Weather also doesn't get cold enough here to excuse "it's nice to have someone do it in the winter so I don't have to get out".

What's your take on it?

They have a breakaway hose on the diesel pumps at walmart. The nozzle weighs like 10 pounds and I support it with my hand when filling because it flexes the filler neck. I think it's ridiculous.
