I'm looking for a good quality safety razor. I just can't find one for sale ANYWHERE. Anybody got leads on these things?

Let me check the "throwaway" section from Grandpa's estate sale......
As a kid, those were cool and made a wonderful toy.

Personna double blade. Last I checked, they are still American made or at least American assembled.

BTW, guys. I have a patent pending on an improvement on the old bladed razor. I'll let you know when/if it's approved.

I decided to bypass all safety razors and take it back to the old school. I wanted to get the closest shave possible.

I'm now using an antique hand forged Wade and Butcher 3/8 Straight Razor.
Shaving cream is Proraso applied with a brush.
Aftershave is Skin Bracer or Old Spice.

That's what I call a close shave.

What primarily dulls a blade are usually mineral deposits on the blade, especially along the edge. I don't see how cryo treatment would help prevent those deposits. Or maybe you have very soft water locally and get almost no deposits.

I can't comment on this. But I have gone from about 1 week per blade to 6-8 weeks with the greatrazor treated blades. I shave about everyday and have a decently heavy beard.

I also found a new trick called Shave Secret that is an oil substance. I use it in the shower and even helps the blade last longer. They sell it at walmart. http://www.shavesecret.com/

Be care though, if you are shaving more than 1-2 days growth it will clog your razor like crazy. I also only use it in the shower as it seems to work better in there. I've been using it for 2-3 months and I really like how it does. A bottle lasts at least 3 months.

Thanks for reminding me. Just checked I had 1 new blade left. That's an 8 pack of blades lasting over one year. Last order 9/2/08. That's 14 months on 7 blades.

Cryo+shave secret is a winner

Mach 3 Razors. Only blade that actually cuts through my beard in one swipe. I use each about 4 times/5 times before it no longer cuts smoothly and starts to gash my face. Basically 1 Razor a month.

I had a Norelco electric shaver, biggest waste of 150 bucks EVER. I don't know how people stand to use electric shavers, I've tried Braun, Norelco and Phillips shavers upwards of 400 bucks for the higher end ones and I can shave faster, and shave closer with a Razor than I can with the Shaver any day. I have way more precision as well so I can line out my Go-T.

That and the Mach 3 Razors are so easy to clean. I just run it under water and there is ample enough space between all 3 blades it just flushes the shavings out. My Shick Quattro was a nightmare to clean. Blades are to close and it wouldn't rinse right out. I've since stopped buying the Razor cartridges and just went with the bags of mach 3's. Tired of the snapon head coming off mid-stride during a shave.

My shaving creams of choice are:

Nivea Shaving Gel
Barbasol Shaving Cream
Gilette Shaving Gel.

Which ever is available and cheap. All others are meh. I use Gilette Shaving Gel more than anything as its available almost anywhere, the other two are rare finds. Nivea is an overseas brand, actually one of the few that work's good and prevents razor burn better than the other two.

+1

+2. I used to use Edge or Gillette gel, but have become cheap after I learned that Barbasol does the same thing, for almost $1.00 less. Tried cheaper razors ended up with razor burn almost equivalent to sunburn, so I cant cheap out on those.

I started using that stuff as a pre-shave, along with Aveno therapeutic shave cream, and it's essentially stopped all my facial breakouts, redness, dryness, and irritation! I also use the shave secret oil as a facial moisturizer. It's at Walmart for about 4 bucks a bottle. Best stuff ever!

So, after some 20+ years of shaving, I just started using a shaving brush (badger hair) and shaving cream. Still use my old Gillette Fusion razor though.

I like it quite a bit. It seems that I'm able to get a closer shave and the skin is less irritated.

I use my Dad's old Norelco HF1121 electric shaver from the mid 70s, and it needs to be tuned up or something.

I think I should buy a new electric shaver. I don't have a tough beard. I only need to shave about every 3 days.

Badger hair brush, proper shaving cream or soap whipped up in a bowl by hand. A double-edge razor blade (usually a Red IP or even a Feather) in one of several double edge razors I own, typically the Gilette Slim Adjustable from 1962 my Dad gave me.

Take a good 10 minutes to do it properly, you'll be glad you did. That being said I've got a full beard this winter and will revert to the Donegal style when temps stay warmer.

My best experiences have been with Philips Norelco electrics. They are very quiet, blades last a very long time when taken care of, and they are comfortable to use.

I used a Norelco Quadra for a while (still works fine) and recently upgraded to the new Norelco SensoTouch 3D. The SensoTouch is expensive, but it's a very nice shaver that can be used wet or dry.

I usually shave dry without pre-shave with the electric, but sometimes use Lectric Shave as a pre-shave. When shaving wet with an electric, I use whatever foam or gel is cheapest.

I used a Wet/Dry Panasonic for a little while, but it didn't last very long and was noisier than the Philips. It also had a tendency to get very hot during use, especially when dry with no pre-shave, which was not comfortable.
