What do you folks think is a good dog food ?

It's quite amazing to look at the ingredients of various dog food brands you think are high quality, only to see corn as the first ingredient!

Hmmm...that's odd. Most of their products in the Science Diet line list a protein source (Lamb, Chicken, Beef) as the #1 ingredient, followed up with rice as the binding filler. In fact, the closest I could find for corn as a primary ingredient was "Adult Original" (#2); all the other varieties had it listed as fourth or sixth.

What exact flavor were you using? Just curious...

We are getting Dad's Homestyle now. They seem to like it. (just read label, #1 is corn) I give them 'ol Roy Dinner Rounds as treats. Yeah, it's junk. When I go to Chinese Buffet, I get them a to-go of "Exotic Meats". BBQ Chicken, Ribs, Scallion Chicken, Peking Duck, "Fish" etc. $1.50-$2 a serving...they LOVE it! I'm a bad owner.

My dogs ate Purina ONE Lamb and Rice or Beef and Rice. I also gave then each a big can of whatever "premium" meaty dog food I saw at the store each evening. They also supplemented their diets with whatever they could steal from the table, or snatch away from me.

I actually have to buy the take-out platter for the dogs for a treat, as we are vegetarians and there are no table scraps here they like. The nice part is they don't beg.

Sweet dogs Mark! Is that a Shepard there?

Yep, two of them. The black and tan girlie was a sweetie, the white boy a magnificent beast, but as white shepherds can often be, crazy. The wolfhound could not be outrun by anything I ever saw her chase.

I oft wonder how humans and dogs/wolves got to the top of the food chain prior to food production businesses, T.V. chefs, and takeaway foods.

I'll stick to the "caveman" diet for my relatively unevolved dog, and try to minimise the amount of human intervention in mine and my family's.

BTW, anyone who thinks a dog can be vegetarian, OR a ruminant should be fed sheep offal needs their head read.

I've a near white Husky/Samoyed...she's insane. Wouldn't hurt a flea but insane...never seen 20kg of dog highside before, and she does it regularly. Turns in too fast and deep, then flips and rolls.

As to wolfhounds, I'd love one.

Miss my old Elkhound to bits.

Best I dfon't mention our two Maltesers. Loyal beyond belief but a bad choice for kids. Tash has been bitten twice on the face by the younger boy dog Sammy when she teased them with food. Will miss them badly when gone.

Nutro Ultra. We have one greyhound of our own and play foster home to others, and they need a high-protein diet with little filler. The foster we have now, his coat was noticable shinier in a week.

Just a bump on this thread. If you think Hills Science Diet is good dog food, read the ingredients and guaranteed analysis. Then compare to other brands. It's no better, well, actually worse then something like Purina Beneful.

My shepard just has not been eating lately and I've tried everything. I refuse to buy Eukenuba, it's blatantly overpriced and really no better than the other premium dog foods.

I'd like the ol girl to eat premium dog food but she won't. Pedigree (TERRIBLE) and Beneful are the only two she just devours. Beneful isn't the best, but definitely isn't the worst (corn, number 1 ingredient like Science craap Diet), so I'm gonna stay with it for a while. It's also much cheaper than Science Diet.

I've been researching the heck out of dog food the last couple weeks!

Pedigree, Ol Roy, Alpo, and Purina Dog Chow are the worst brands you can buy. Wellness is probably one of the if not the best dog food you can buy.

If your dog will eat it, Maxximum Nutrition from Walmart is a quality dog food at an outstanding price. Made by the same company as Ol Roy. But it doesn't contain New York sewer rats!

IAMS weight maint for mine. One of mine is allergic to Red dye #40, makes him puke, so we have to be careful. Careful is, unfortunately, bland for them.

My 2 Cockers and Border Collie get Hills Science Diet. I used to use Canadae, but my daughter sells Science Diet wholesale so I use that now. I would still be using Canadae but I get the SD at about half the cost.
