What do you folks think is a good dog food ?

Raw meaty bones and chicken carcasses.
A couple times a week pasta and veges, or rice and veges. Appropriate table scraps

I feed my dog Pixel only Soylent Green.

We buy several a few from the U.S. Hills Science Diet, Iams Eukanuba, and yesterday a new one Purina Beneful from Switzerland I believe. Not supermarket rubbish which has a lot of 'filler'.

Purina one with a hint of Iams canned is what my German Shepard gets.

I used to feed her Pedigree; I can tell a noticeable difference in softness of fur etc. between premium dog food and cheap/by product/corn based food ala Pedigree.

I would second Shannow's recommendation. There is nothing better than natural foods.

You never know what's in the packeged foods - euthanized dogs and cats, processed meat remains, etc.

You n=know that meat processing plants do not throw anything away.

At 18 yrs, old MILLIE gets what ever she will/wants to eat. Right now it's just Sams Club small dog biscuits (the variety ones) last week it was only Beniful for adult dogs. Next week???????

When the daughter brings her golden home to visit, it's his food. &#$@ women!

The walmart "advanced nutrition" lamb & rice. Try to skip corn where possible.

My dogs like Beneful ..but we're wondering if their flea allegies are exacerbated by the food. We spray enough and they're bathed in flea type stuff about once a month ..but the Rot-n-Lab gets nearly bare with itching. We assume that it's a flea allergy since it goes away in the winter. Other owners have remarked that hot spots went away when switching from Purina foods. We're trying a Iams food this round.

It's hard to tell with all the lame breeding. Some dogs are just going to be trouble prone.

Eukanuba kibble, shredded Fresh Turkey or chicken breast and veggies , my dogs will occasiojnhally eat a lettuce tomate salad(Whenever I cook a pot of benas the dogs want there share of that too.) My female who is a former breeder gets Cheese nearly daily to deal with calcium defficincies. Along with Some supplements to help there aging bones..

Small animals euthanized by veterinarians are not turned over to processing plants for use in animal feed. Where do people get this junk? Trust me, there are a myriad of laws and regulations that govern what happens to a carcas from the moment "blue death" is introduced until it goes for incineration. Believing that small pets are being reintroduced to the animal food chain is rediculous. No system exists for such a clandestine plot, not to mention I highly doubt any veterinarian is going to risk censure of their license in order to make a few bucks on the side with this silly plot.

BTW: "Natural Foods" for your pets are fine if you are expert enough to guarantee that your cat or dog is getting exactly what it needs to be healthy. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people who go the "table scraps" method aren't and inevitably the first visit the animal ever gets to a veterinary clinic is when the animal has a problem. The only thing more rediculous than putting an animal exclusively on food tailored for a human diet is when a vegetarian/vegan puts their animal on that sort of diet.

Dogs cost a lot these days and they are dependent upon you to make the right decisions for them. Don't be cheap...there are plenty of coupons and discounts out there for tier-two feed (a notch below what you can buy from your veterinarian but still the highest quality you can find in retail stores). I mean, if money is that much of an issue, ask you vet for help...I'm quite sure you can get a discount on the markup for Hill's, Eukanuba, etc.

Forgot to mention this, but if you want to forgoe buying via a veterinarian, Purina ProPlan is a really good choice. It's not exactly cheap (as compared to products you find a Wallyworld), but it's more affordable than Hill Science and others. Plus, you can get it at places like "Tractor Supply" and "Petsmart."

Yeah, that's an intersting diet. I'm quite sure that the omnivores serving that to their pets are following a similar diet themselves...out of principal and such. Nothing like a smattering of cold veggies and raw, unprocessed meat for breakfast, lunch & dinner.

BTW: I like how Wikipedia is up front with a warning that the article has been flagged for it's neutrality (rather, lack of it) in presenting the issue. What a joke...I'll have to share that with people I know.

We give our dogs Nutro Adult Large Breed Lamb & Rice. They've been on it for about 2 years now with great results. We used to feed Science Diet until I found out it's mostly corn.....
