What could I expect to pay for this service

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 engine.

Hemi tick..goes away after 15 seconds or by pushing down on the exhaust shield.

replacing exhaust manifold gaskets and studs. Possibility of having to drill one out if broken below surface of the head.

from a dealer?
independent mechanic?

If you've diagnosed correctly, seems like you're in the enviable position of taking it around to a few places and getting actual estimates. It's been decades but in the dark old days (probably early nineties) Meineke was always quite clever and coming up with creative ways to achieve an end. Probably because they had fewer stock, of the shelf, pieces available.

Parts would be $60 or so...if there are no broken studs below the head and no drilling out, assuming a couple hours of labor.

Since you know what the problem is, concentrate on finding a good indy mechanic. Dealers can be excellent too, usually to customers they developed a relationship with, either from vehicle purchase or service work.

I've always referred people to the dealer for this stuff. Many of these V8 SUV/truck engines with this problem are so prevalent, the dealerships have to have a tech that can do it quickly and well.

Big O tire can usually do things like this at a good rate. If you have a good Indy mechanic that would be great too. Should not be very hard to do so low risk of screwing it up.

You are sure there is a blown gasket or cracked manifold? I had a cracked manifold on Camry that would make less noise once engine was warm and the metal expanded. When I sold it at 225K miles it was still there but not to the point to bother me.

They're notorious for it. My 2011 Durango had some broken as well.

OP, if they don't have to pull the head it won't be that bad... couple of friends had to have the heads pulled though.
