What are you working on today?

My rattle can paint job is pretty pathetic in person. But he never washes the truck, and the sun will fade the paint pretty quickly which will actually be a good thing here. So fade + dust and mud means soon no one will notice :p
Given the propensity of it to be wrecked again, you'll probably replace that fender again at some point if the truck doesn't get totaled

Changed the heater hoses and coolant flange on my 2.0 TFSI due to them leaking and I can’t stand refilling more coolant. It wasn’t fun at all but got it done in around 5 hours. Sadly no fun pictures.
Good thing I can use my jobs workshop so I have more than enough tools.

Also changed the oil because I didn’t remember when I did it last time. Got Shell Ultra Helix ect 0w30 and a wix filter.

How much were the parts if I may ask and the miles on the vehicle. I have the same engine.

around 150 bucks i think (i live in sweden so everything is expensive). Car has 130k miles on it. The flange is a very standard part to leak. ECS makes a aluminum cast one if you care.

2011 Subaru Outback with 244k: oil change

This is a vehicle I did head gaskets on awhile back. It was a drama saga because it was the first time I've done Subaru head gaskets. It's been about 5k miles and it hasn't blown up, so I guess that's good :p. Coolant was full so that's also good

The low oil light had come on (because it was indeed low) and I went to YT U to find the trick of moving a 10A fuse around to clear the light after the oil change.

The owner is elderly and her loser 42 yr old live-at-home-with-mommy son is too incompetent to read the dipstick (sigh)

Why bring @AutoMechanic into this...😆

Reshimmed and reworked one door.. trimmed that door and one other. Did a few other pieces here and there. Two bottles of strong beer in the frig if you want to know how it went. Next house better be square and level or it’ll be a nice bonfire.

I busted the auger belt on my snowblower last storm. I tossed an old belt on it to finish up and ordered a new belt. 60F today, the planets were in alignment, I was in the mood, so I put the new belt on the machine. As a bonus I did some cleaning up in the garage!! I find sometimes that getting old requires doing jobs when you wake up in the mood for doing them, if not I pass. They seem to go better that way.

I was summoned for the neighbor's '24 CX-30 2.5
It just had it's first birthday, which means it's due for it's first oil change
I swung by the Mazda dealer, ~$9 lighter for a "Value" oil filter that looks like a rebranded Champion E-Core
And they're out of crush washers 🙄
3 different auto parts stores on the Island lacked a M14 Dorman crush washer
I wound up reusing the factory one, hope it doesn't leak 🤔
If it wasn't windy, it would be a simple oil change
Very demure and mindful drain plug/filter location, 8/17mm and you're done
Factory unobtanium Toyo Roki filter
The wind blew all these leaves into the drain pan

Edge EP 0w20 should suffice

I took it for a spin around the block after adjusting tire pressures down (PDI fail 👀)
I don't get why these are so popular, I didn't find it particularly comfortable or refined, yet not sharp enough to be sporty 🤷‍♂️
Maybe the turbo or AWD would help

Exactly...when I get in the groove I do things. If I ain't, I bail......

Making some progress with the cheap project Civic
I managed to cure a parasitic drain issue that stymied the previous owner for years
The driver's door lock would never work power, after two false starts with incorrect latches, I finally got the right one in
It would constantly try to keep unlocking, with a constant +12v feed
After inspecting wires and grounds, unplugging the other switches, I called it a bad MICU (Honda speak for BCM)
It's integrated with the interior fuse box, it's $800+, and you allegedly need HDS software to program it
A $65 used one, new actuator, and my Launch X431 Pro Elite made light work of the job
1000003555.webp

You need this function
After the swap, the driver's door lock and new actuator worked perfectly, the alarm armed/disarmed, the keyless entry worked, but it would start and stall, with a flashing green key light
The PCM, Imm unit, and MICU all need to agree with each other, you will need a scan tool with this exact function

Gonna be the nicest $1500 Civic the city has ever seen 😏
People like cars they can enter and exit right ⁉️

Track day prep. New front rotor rings. Old ones were below min. spec which is 2mm less than new (34mm) so 32mm min. I was just below 31mm. When the slots are gone it's time. New rear pads. Bleed. A few K miles with front toe out killed my front right tire...whoops. Only have a month left before swapping my summer tires on so no big deal...will get new all seasons in the fall for next winter.

Yesterday, for some reason didn't post it then

On my 04 Silverado, replaced fuel filter, air filter, wiper blades. I rotated the tires and inspected brakes a few weeks ago when I changed the oil, and also greased everything that can be greased.

Today I fired up the pressure washer and washed the truck.

Hand washed the BMW and Escape, door jambs and all. Washed the Dakota but just hit it with the brush and bleached the cap, for some reason mildew likes it. Attempted to paint the in between section, used to have some sort of plastic wrap. I should never touch a spray can. Someday if I build a garage I'll fix it. Swapped the drivers axle in Festiva with the parts cars, really want to be able to drive it this year. There were some small differences in the two. Won't be able to test drive till tomorrow.

Those Dakotas were GREAT TRUCKS. I recalling drooling over them when they came out. Dodge would let you custom-configure those things towards a purpose with many, many options from extra cooling to extra electric, to towing and suspension. Those were some great years.

If you've ever been a broke college kid or had kids, you're probably familiar with folding futon frames like this:

We were given one last year to scrap (all our acquaintances give us metal because they know we conduct regular scrap runs). It was still sitting around because, white trash and 35 acres :D

We needed a new mailbox and mount and I figured the thin wall tubing of a futon frame was not a bad choice.

I find the whole thing kinda comical, and it works (neighbor's sq tube metal mount in the background)

I welded 8" flat bar to the round tube and anchored through the floor of the box -- even the 1/4‐20 bolts and nuts came from the futon frame. Look at me repurposing! I'm such a good person <-----sarcasm

Bravo!

I'm hoarding L channel bedframes that folks toss at the curb for similar projects like this. Good job man.
