What are you working on today?

Nothing today. Planned on changing the oil in the truck but the niece and nephews came over from 10am-9pm. Family time is something I value a lot so I chose not to work on stuff unless it’s with them but it was raining here all day. They were a bit annoying today but you got to let them be kids lol. Glad they came over too cause my brother in law brought me some Apple air pods for free authentic too. Can’t beat that family time and free head phones. Time to chill and watch baseball after I get a soda at the gas station. We made pumpkin spice cinnamon rolls with them they were amazing. Me and my nephews like to watch phone unboxing videos together so we did that. Lol.

Sold the remains of two Panther platform cars: a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria and a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis. Engines were shot, transmissions might have been ok, but they were destined for the scrapper.

Buyer is going to use them for training his daughters on demolition derby. Such an end for the Grand Marquis I got from the (now defunct) Lincoln Mercury dealer 22 years ago… the Ford? It used to be used for chemical dependency work with a nearby police agency, but it was not a P71 police interceptor but a base fleet car.

Sold my nieces VW New Beetle Turbo… buyer will pick it up Monday and left a large deposit.

Installed new water pump, thermostat and valve cover on the replacement engine for my nephew’s 2010 Crown Victoria and will place that on a pallet and on the truck. The car will be trailered since the valve cover came off his car’s damaged engine. Delivery slated for Monday so the shop can work on it later this week. I’m not doing it since I have a full schedule of jobs and don’t have time to do that engine replacement and finish my projects too. Besides, his engine replacement is non-revenue work, and my projects bring in cash. 😎

Threw on a new bumper yesterday and we’re out trucking corn stalk bales today

All buttoned up, hopefully this Korean Valeo/HL Mando alternator lasts
I hear these cars don't take parts store remans well
  • Oil change (Total 5w40/OEM filter)
  • Throttle body cleaning
  • New alternator
  • Warranty exchange Costco battery
  • Clean and coat terminals with Noalox
Hopefully I never see this car again, I'm done with its owner and his abusiveness and hit/miss payment

This things a total pile, tap the brakes and the steering wheel jerks right, and pulls sharply left

Found the mother of all yellow jacket nests
My wife uses the Terro traps you put red juice in. Terro was having a terrible time with supplying the juice so she finally gave up and made her own based solely upon smelling what they sell. She uses a mixture of vinegar, red Kool-aid and something else....maybe sugar?

ANYWAY, it catches WAY more wasps than the commercial stuff! I can get you her recipe if you want.

Also chlorinated Brakleen is your friend, provided you won't get overspray on anything or anyone you care about (it can craze some plastics)

I would like this too!!

Replaced the rear window trim and non-structural seal on the 996 911. The old one had shrunk and was starting to lift a little at the lower corners, drove me crazy but not sure others would even notice. A soft rubber flange fits into a small plastic slot in a plastic channel that locks them both around the glass. Went slowly and the new OE seal is slightly larger than the glass so you have to spread out the excess around three sides. Not difficult, but character building 1/2" at a time...

Our traps work great. They are totally full in less than 2 days.

No chlorinated solvents or nasty pesticides allowed near our well, basically on or near our property.

A few days ago. 2013 Toyota Corolla - AC drain hose

Friend's new/used Corolla had a wet floor. The end of the drain hose was broken off and missing. Based on the extent of the wetness (the rear floor was wet) this has been going on for a while.

Shoved a 1/4" length of fuel line into the broken portion of the rubber bellow and routed it thru the floor/firewall so the AC could still be used until the replacement part arrives. Friend is driving daily to Davis for medical treatment; can't be without AC this time of year.

The drain hose finally showed up on Friday, installed on Saturday (yesterday).

Tools required:
  • 1/4" flat bladed screwdriver
  • CRC silicone spray
  • Flashlight
  1. Removed a small panel from the front of the console. No tools required.
  2. Pulled up the front of the carpet in the passenger footwell.
  3. Removed the old hose. Used the screwdriver to pry it off the cooler box nipple.
  4. Wet the ID of the replacement hose with a dab of silicone; install hose onto nipple.
  5. Clocked hose so that notch in hose matched with nib on nipple.
  6. Wet the floor gromment of hose assembly and pushed it thru and set in firewall.
  7. Replace carpet and console panel.
  8. Collect $33.22 for the hose.

The bearings on the secondary cooling fan of our Highlander started making noise. A quick trip to Rock Auto netted a new Dorman (made in Taiwan) fan assembly. After it arrived, it took just a little over an hour to change it out. 340,000 miles on the original set isn't too bad!

How good did the new one look..?

Rabbit hole day. Installing a rebuilt AX15 from High Gear Transmissions in TN in an '88 XJ. Vehicle had already been swapped to AX15-- should have been a BA10 originally.

It was shipped with the shifter and I went to pull the shifter today so I could shove it under the vehicle. Then the rabbit hole opened. I discovered so much rusty gunk in the shifter housing I decided to unbolt it to clean it out rather than knock it all down into the case.

First, the bolts came out awfully hard and I couldn't understand why. Also the bolts were different lengths and the longer ones had just the bottom threads chewed up. Bonus points if you suspect what happened already.

I selected the worst hole and started to clean it up with an M8x1.25 tap. It was tapping really weird....couldn't figure that out either. Finally it became clear when my tap shoved out a Helicoil (fortunately I chose an exterior, through hole!!). I really think whatever genius installed these didn't break off the installation tang. Then he just drove the longer bolts into the tang, munching the bottom threads. Helicoil on left:

Tons of gunk and chunks and rust at the lever seat.

Also the shifter housing had not been sealed and had remnants of old gasket on it

And I think this is supposed to be a vent but it's clogged solid.

I decided to use the shifter housing from the old unit which is when I discovered the conical ball seat was flat out missing from the High Gear unit. Maybe those were the rusty, gritty chunks I found, but does a plastic/poly really break down like that??

Right now, not too impressed with High Gear, and the packaging on the pallet left a lot to be desired.

Spinning nylon most of the day but it's one of those I can do no wrong days. Tomorrow will probably be a fiasco...
