What are you working on today?

Wife’s car due for OC. Took the afternoon off, got it from her office, brought it home, also cleaned the interior because it’s dirty, and took it back to her. She is an accountant and they are working 13 hour days right now, 7 days a week. Car runs better. Wife needs a break. Car did too. Penzoil platinum 5-30 and a M1 filter, 2014 crv. Yes I know it calls for 0-20.

friend‘s son is coming over tomorrow. My friend is overseas right now. 4 AC Delco rotors and 4 sets of raybestos pads going into an 09 Camry with 300k on it. Last time I drove it, the brakes were really bad. I’m not sure what it’s got in it, but a tech who refurbs used cars to resell them did the work. Brakes have scary no bite and it’s the worst pulsation I’ve seen, ever, so I told him I’d buy the parts so that it’s done right and I know what’s in it. OC for him too. They are a wonderful family and I’m happy to help. His gets a toyota filter and penzoil 5-20 platinum high mileage.

Thursday I worked on negotiating a part time job. Yesterday I worked on a 1991 Chevrolet S10 that wouldn't start. Turned out the customer inadvertently bought $40 worth of water when he fueled up last. I was able to disconnect the fuel filter under the truck, and feed the fuel pump test wire with battery voltage to use the truck's pump to empty the tank. I refilled it with 10 gallons of fresh gas and two bottles of Heet, and replaced the fuel filter. It's clearing out, but still has an occasional stumble. I'm keeping it and driving it around until it runs out without issue.

Replaced the battery in wife's 17 Tuscon. 35k miles.

Six years of service in a hot climate is plenty for me and the CCA dipped into the warning zone on the meter.

Installed a walmart MAXX battery for $149. with 3 year warranty.

All other parts sellers wanted 200 for a similar battery.

Passed on walmart $169 AGM offering with 4 year warranty.

Compared to Ford installation, Tuscon was a dream.

Two clips on the airbox, two 10mm and 1 12mm with long extension for the battery wedge.

15 minute job and I am not a mechanic.

Put a new Motorcraft coil pack on the Taurus SW in signature. Check engine light came on out of nowhere and mechanic said plug one from the coil pack had no or barely no spark. Just put new NGK and brand new spark plug wires in 3.0L Vulcan little less then 600 miles ago. Installed coil pack, erased code and took it for a nice back road drive for about half hour. Purrrs like a kitten...

Logging.

Splitter time now.

Small up date, parts finally showing up…what a disaster for availability. He also went with odawg S2R intake and Ended up with KDD ICON aluminum heads with 100# springs because of availability. Still waiting in the cam. I’m going to pull the “No no” bolts out and pull the hub off the crank to continue on assembly without the cam as this has become a bit of a time crunch now (seen in photo of crank, backside of drive gear). For those that do not know this hub on the back of the crank is not doweled to the crank and is held on by 6 bolts and also is the sealing surface for RMS. If you don’t pay attention then it can be installed in 6 different orientations, only one being correct (there is however a secret to how it goes even if you do not match mark it). Ford says if removed the crank is “junk”. You must install in exact orientation as it was or an engine vibration will occur. This hub locates the weighted flexplate in a specific place. Run out must be checked before and after removal/install.

Today just painted block, measured main, rod and piston ring clearances and assembled pistons/rods. Crank was polished, Block was bored 30 over and .010 taken off deck. Rod clearances came in at .0015-.0018” and mains .0028-0035. #3 was .0001” over maximum spec but I don’t see that being an issue. Piston rings are all .018” top, .060” second and about .012” oil ring. Had .015” shaved off the pistons to keep protrusion down due to the amount taken off the deck, but pistons also have valve reliefs. All measured with a dial bore gauge not plasti gauge. A week or so I’ll be putting the rest of the bottom end together.

Will the station be footing the bill?

Freightliner company flatbed 'no trans' warning popped up, threw codes bh33 and spn 2003 for no TCM communication. Trying to cover the bases by checking battery connections and chassis grounds today. Tomorrow pt2 will be moving onto continuity and voltage checks, probing wires and fuses.

Getting closer to pinpointing the problem, other mech want to replace IGN relay since when it gets hot it seems to act up. At that point everything power related is covered.
Saw an SMA video of an Allison TCM in a GM Duramax acting up when it gets hot and since they share the same TCM it is exhibiting the same issue too.
Condemning the TCM is a steep decision since it's a $1000 part to replace and reprogram, as well as the truck sitting for a few more days.

That will be between him and the station. I'm making him two copies of the bill so he can prove to the station that he had the issue, and also three glass jars of samples I pulled from the tank to prove he indeed got water from their pump. He can't be the only one to have had trouble that day, so I'm sure the station is aware.

Cleaned, sanded and primered the 6 used brake rotors gained this week from helping friends. Two will be painted black and attached beneath my wife’s flower pots so they stop blowing over. The other 4 will probably end up as furniture at some point.

threw mulch in new landscaping. Never had mulch before. Or landscaping. It’s pretty, but I’m not thrilled with the upkeep. Learning new things.

the “coaster” is a square of laminate flooring left over from the bathroom.

Use a heat gun to warm the TCM.

Not today but over the weekend, I replaced the struts on my 2009 Toyota Venza. Fairly strait forward with no rust. Only casualty was a craftsman 3/8 ratchet. First ratchet I have broken since I started working on cars over 40 years ago. KYB strut assembly on all four corners, about 3.5 hours in the driveway.
