What are you working on today?

Today I am replacing water valve on main supply line to refrigerator icemaker, and the control valve for icemaker and filtered water. Fun.

Went and bought some groceries awhile ago. I also finished up some laundry, shaved, and have to run the vacuum before the days out.

Cleaned up the BBQ shed - my big roll of Reynolds foil got wet (box ruined) - so made a hanger with PVC rod and two hacksaw blades to rip the foil against … Wish I could afford meat now - maybe I’ll settle for chicken 😷

Installing a new bathroom vanity and sink. Ran to the dee-pot for two new bends and a new Kohler faucet. Going to be cleaner than the 1980s kluge that I've been living with.
6 crazy bends and a trap are being replaced by a single bend and a ring catcher trap.

That's interesting that you already have lug nuts swelling on that already. Our 2015 has seen plenty of salt and not one has given me an issue. We try and frequently wash after storms though...

Also, if you don't need extra braking power, stick to OEM pads/shims. I put Raybestos Element 3 Hybrid pads on ours and while brake performance is stellar, they constantly squeal when you apply the brakes. They were lubed up when I did it all and everything is moving freely. Something about Toyota's and aftermarket pads/rotors they don't like. I ignore it as the Element 3's brake so much better than OEM.
Thanks for the info on the brakes. Our 2004 we have only used aftermarket brakes and it eats rotors like mad haha especially fronts the backs are original still and the fronts were way past due when we replaced them last year. Now the other ones are worn too haha. Yeah I was surprised about the lug nuts too probably where they haven’t been taken off in so long her last tire rotation was 2019 when the maintenance warranty expired because she doesn’t like me lifting it with a Jack lol. And I am not allowed to drive it as she is very protective of her car so I can’t take it to work and do it unless she brings it there. Between Toyota and Ford and the Jeep Lug Stud style lug nuts I really need to invest in some half sized sockets. It’s ridiculous I’m a Subaru tech but need all these tools for different brands when we get trade ins or it gets slow and they find us stuff to do lol. The vehicle has never been driven in the snow or winter conditions so that’s what makes it weird too at least it wasn’t all of them.

Installed 2 solar panels on the camper to add to the single which can’t cut it during the winter months. It basically gets used as a telework/study, and the single battery takes too long to recover after a dark day with a laptop and a couple of lights on. ive kept a cord on it off and on and got tired of the wire. They came with a charge controller, but the brand is cheap so I’ll take it apart and make sure it’s heat-sinked properly first.

left the trunk light on in the car, as it didn’t totally latch closed. Put a charge on the battery overnight.

continued digging a shallow trench in the yard to catch rainstorm run off from the uphill side of our yard. I prefer doing it in the rain when the ground is softer, like today.

Checked the front brakes on moms car as they were grinding away only when you hit the brake from about 35 or so and higher. Front inner pad on driver side is measuring 5mm the outer pad and pads on the other side are all measuring 6mm. Probably going to try and take the pins off and lubricate them to see if that will fix it maybe there is a hang up somewhere. It only has 27,000 on it. Never had the wheels off besides rotating them. I will double check the back pads but it’s highly unlikely that they would be the issue. Dad said probably will just go ahead and change the front pads and hardware and re-lubricate the pins and see if the issue continues on. I watched several videos on YouTube and all of them appear to replace pads before they make it to the 3mm mark they were replacing about 6mm or so so I’m wondering if there is an issue with these that I am unaware of. Also applied anti seize to the lug studs and wheel mounting surfaces. This car has the two piece lug nuts and only one was swollen luckily. Might order some new lug nuts for all around when we do the tires as I did have to hammer a socket on the swollen one.
When it came to the two piece lug nuts on my vehicles, I ordered solid lug nuts to replace them to avoid any problems with swelling. When I run into swollen lug nuts, it pisses me off at the ignorance at such designs.

Went to Home Depot and picked up a bag of ice melt and salted the apartment complex parking lot. Rained all day today and going below freezing overnight, would be a skating rink in the morning if I didn't get it now, management barely keeps it plowed but doesn't salt for some reason.

Soldered on a new Delphi Packard headlight connector on an old co-coworker’s car and an oil change. The wiring on that car was so bad, I had to sand the bare wires, dab on flux and use Amazon Chineseium solder seal connectors just to repair it. I tried to use rosin core solder and a 40W Weller soldering pencil to no avail.

The car is a Toyota Matrix, which has a hodgepodge of Sumitomo and Delphi(Aptiv) wiring. The Delphi Packard connector except for the 12AWG wiring was exactly the same as OE.

I also installed a new Sony double-din deck in the parent’s beater van. Backup camera is in the works.

Hauled off a load of scrap this morning, then swung by the machine shop to pick up that 5.7 TBI motor for the '91 Silverado. Hooked the Escalade up to the Silverado after lunch and pulled it into the shop. I'll start putting it back together tomorrow morning.

What did you get for a load of “scrap”? Haven’t taken in any in like 7 months

Yesterday I got the 5.7 dressed and sat over in the truck. The bottom side of the job is done, today I've got to get the top side done and get it running. I've also got a 1999 Silverado that probably needs a fuel pump, so I need to confirm that today as well. If it needs a pump I'll probably fix it tomorrow.

Just did the fuel pump on my son's 97 Silverado. I pulled the bed. 8 bed to frame bolts, 3 ground straps, 3 screws for the filler neck and 3 electrical connections. Took 35 minutes to get the bed off. This is the 3rd fuel pump (original, replacement and the one I put in). The last "mechanic" who replaced the pump just put the pump in (replaced at 148,000, truck now has 163,000 on it), not the whole sending unit. I am fine with that, but he used a cheap one AND instead of replacing the O-ring he used plumbers putty under and all over the locking ring...Took an hour to get the old pump out. Cleaned it up and put a brand new GM pump in. No leaks, proper O-rings. Truck runs very nice now. Tows our 21 foot 5500lbs boat a lot better than I thought it would. Pump form GM was just at 200.00 dollars. Worth it so I don't have to mess with it 6 months to a year down the road.

The 91 Silverado is all buttoned up and running great. Customer picks it up tomorrow morning and he'll bring it back in ~500 miles for the first oil change. Initial fill is Amsoil SAE 30 break in oil with an AcDelco filter. Also was able to get the 99 Silverado fixed quickly. Fuel pump relay was bad. Tomorrow morning after the 91 gets picked up I'm headed to go look at a few more trucks.

I hope you changed the fuel filter.

I hope you changed the fuel filter.
I changed it like 800 miles ago when I had to change the fuel line which again the last guy had cross threaded. I was under there changing the oil with my son and noticed it was leaking. It was the line from the filter to the engine.
