What are you working on today?

Diagnosed the Tundra yesterday and confirmed the engine and turbo is toasted. We are just going to replace the truck because the engine and turbo are months out and almost the value of the truck to replace them. Customer gets to pick one out with the same trim package as well as tons of coupons and all of that good stuff. The truck will most likely go to auction as is. For those who don’t know our lube tech left the drain plug loose on Monday and it came out on I-77 near the Virginia-West Virginia state line on the Virginia side of the East River Mountain Tunnel and got towed back in. I posted that part in the what are you doing thread. This is about his 18th car he has damaged in some way. At least 16 of those times it has had to have a tow truck bring it back. Thank goodness his last day was today supposed to have been Friday. He had a car towed back in again today for two loose wheels on one side. He tried to blame his partner for everything saying it was all their fault. They told him just to go that they didn’t need him anymore. He came crying to me wanting me to beg them for his job back I’m like I’m not asking for your job back because for one thing it won’t matter and two your beyond incompetent. He went on and on and eventually he realized that they were serious and nobody was going to help him with getting his job back for two days. Also done a flat repair, couple oil changes and small things. Also got that Corolla pulled in and checked to make sure there was no damage to anything as well as checked the oil drain plug and filter for good measure and surprisingly both were tight but he failed to torque two of the wheels. Not much big work going on this work.
Dude I need to work there! Apparently they'll tolerate a huge level of incompetence. Maybe they'd even hire me. I could just damage, say, 12 cars and I'd be doing far better than he was ;)

Seriously, I can't believe the dealership has to replace an entire new Tundra.

@GON wants the old one when it goes to auction :D

Haha. We need people. We have no senior techs besides one because they ran everyone else off. Ive been with the company over 3 years and 2 with Toyota and I’ve moved up from 9th to 5th on the seniority list out of 11 at Toyota. I’ve made mistakes but there is a line between mistakes and incompetence. In my first 7 months I had a drain plug come out but car was saved because customer turned it off the moment the oil light came on. And then I had an oil filter vibrate loose on a Chevy truck but then a TSB was issued saying to tighten the filters with a cup and not by hand due to vibration. But neither of those things ever happened again for me. Those are things you do never or once then never again because you get your butt chewed enough after one time that it sets you straight to be more careful. I’ve seen guys blow up cars but again only once never in multiples like this guy.

2013 Suzuki SX4 Sportback, ~93K miles: Replaced ECT sensor, added 12oz of refrigerant, replaced original drivebelt, and front rotors and pads. Will change oil and filter tomorrow.

How long will the 12 oz refrigerant last? Seems like a too big a bandaid for an even bigger problem.

I bought an '07 SX4 new, awesome runaround car for snow country.

One of the most worn Pressure Regulator Valve's I've ever seen, Gonna pull a core out tomorrow as this one is beyond fried.
The TEHCM got so hot it shut down at one point.

The Magnet looks like a ball of Steel Wool. The Clutches have morphed into Steels! LOL

The compressor works but the low pressure at ambient temps (@69 def F) was @20 psi and the high was @120 psi and the car was not cooling for the past couple of weeks. The 12 oz of R134A brought the low to @37 and the high to @188 psi. The AC has started cooling to 40 deg F (air from vents on cold and recirc). The compressor and the pressure switch work; all fans work. Will watch it. Worst case, there is a leak and will then start replacing parts. I have a professional manifold/gauge set and this Robinair pump; bought in 2010. Right now, everything is alright. This is my daughters daily driver and is in excellent shape. I don't do bandaid fixes.

King pins and spring bushings on a fire apparatus. This is a 2021 pierce platform truck with a whopping 15,000 miles. Spring bushings were bronze, but did not last. Mostly from lack of grease. The plastic bushings they use on king pins from the factory do not last on city streets. They’ll be rebushed with bronze bushings. This has a X15 Cummins~600Hp.

Today I'm back working at my friend's shop. I just finished replacing the serpentine belt and idler pulley on a 2004 Hummer H2 and an oil change. I have an oil change to do on a 78 L82 Corvette with air filter replacement. Probably will start pulling a good 4L60 out of a rolled over 97 Suburban this afternoon.

From the department of they-don't-build-'em-like-they-used-to, the '19 Rebel at my non-profit just had plastic fly off the driver's door. @The Critic have you dealt with this?

I think this is what I need

Her right bedrail cover is also trying to depart. Our director was unimpressed-- she said plastic was trying to fly off her truck left and right (literally) on a recent road trip cross-country.

On a brighter note my addition of an under-dash ground seems to have warded off the Parksense and Service Shifter warnings.

June 18 we put a new Trakmotive CV in the LF of an '06 Hummer H3. Today he told me it's crunching.

I think somehow the boot came off and then it failed from lack of grease. But honestly there wasn't THAT much grease flung around. But also not much grease left in there. Maybe it didn't get sufficient grease from the factory.

I really don't know exactly what happened here. The boot seemed intact except for having come off the stub.

In the pics he sent me this morning the clamp was still on the boot. By the time it got to me this afternoon the clamp was gone. No idea how that happened.

The cage that retains the balls was cracked in two.

I had a Duralast CV break in a 3500 Duramax, dad’s truck…. he accidentally left it in 4x4 and made a tight turn on blacktop... The boot ripped when the CV let go. I think it lasted 20 something thousand miles, I didn’t even bother getting it warrantied…. brand new OEM went in. It was user error that caused it to explode, but I’ve never had a factory cv break turning on blacktop and I’ve done it plenty of times.

My mom called me today. Her '18 Cherokee KL won't start. I knew the battery was original and most of those Stellantis-spec'd batteries haven't lasted this long.

I got her to scroll to Vehicle Info ---> Battery Voltage and it said 8.9V

I know what I'm doing later today.....

To her credit she was disgusted and said to get the absolute best battery I can. I've got a Platinum SuperStart coming. I understand WM may have equal offerings for less, but it's sooooo painful to buy it and return the core, at least at my store. I'll pay more for convenience and money is irrelevant to my parents

I needed a 13 ft cedar trunk to complete a small portion of my pond bank restoration. Came down right where I wanted a bit faster than I expected but all OK and no foul! Used a 8" pole saw with 2 extensions on a A frame ladder 4 ft high. First one side then the other.

And the last few days been spreading more mulch on the bank. It's near finished but needing feeding to maintain, level on the west end. Working east along about 250ft of bank. The cedar wall is on the far east end. It's about 8 ft to the water level.

West end bank near done.webp
East end still to go.webp
