What are you working on today?

Dealt with the idiot lube tech at work. Car (2024 RAV4) towed back in from side of interstate 81 with 4 loose wheels. Removed lug nuts and found all the studs had stretched and were slathered in anti seize and had been way over tightened. Every single one of them snapped off when trying to remove them except one which was stretched. He tightened them down on his full speed setting Matco impact gun and then went over them with a torque wrench. So 20 lug studs and lug nuts later. Car was back on the road. Worst part is 5,000 miles only on car. We had to get the studs from one AutoZone location, two Advance Auto locations and two O’Reilly locations to find all of them in town. Thank goodness this guys last day is Friday of next week. Had to order the black lug nuts currently put chrome back on so customer could get the car back. He tried to blame his partner for it all but he always does that. He asked the manager to speak in his office so they did and apparently from what we heard is that he said he was the most qualified tech in the shop to do anything and that he doesn’t make mistakes and blamed everything on his partner. He was mad that the boss would not let him replace the studs. Personally I don’t have respect for someone that doesn’t own up to something they did. I’ve tried gently explaining to this guy that I am willing to help him out to which I got a similar response about him being mister perfect. I still can’t understand why this guy still works here.

Wow...Enough is enough, Heads need to roll, Starting with whomever idea it was to keep letting this guy put customers lives in danger.

It was a good week at the ranch. 14x24 roof panels are up. Should finish 24x24 total next weekend. Installed a new water tank float, two Wyze cameras for nature watching. Ram truck is also looking good, at least to me. 😍

Front brakes on the kid’s 2014 Ford Focus. Replaced stock brake pads and rotors at 52,000 miles with Wagner ecoat rotors and OEX pads. Real nice brake parts I got from Rockauto. I did the driver’s side while narrating and my son watching, then he did the passenger side with me watching. While we had the car on jacks, he did his annual oil change as well (again with me narrating)…

Love passing along my experience and overall fondness for working on cars…

Also done a warranty fog light on a 2024 Tacoma with 800 miles. Such a stupid design. Needless to say I think I need a beer this weekend lol. These are the only two pictures I took of the Tacoma but it was much more labor intensive than it looks. It pays 1.9 hours warranty time. Took me 2.4 hours to do but it was a learning experience. Needless to say won’t be volunteering to do that again lol. View attachment 235852View attachment 235853

Well, at least the Tacoma makes those cool turbo whistle noises... :ROFLMAO:

I bought this Giant Yukon for $300 cash out the door in 1994.. I think it's a bit to small as I feel like I'm to up on the Handlebars nowadays, but it still rolls.

I just replaced a 30 year old Bottom Bracket that I got every possible mile out of! It's a square style, and my Cranks have been wallowed out for a bit. I would cut out slices from an aluminum can to shim up the fit and it works for a while!

I have a new Crank and Sprocket set coming today which will be my 3rd set for this Bike. Maybe the last.. I also cleaned up the Chain and Rear Cassette. Zep Purple Industrial Cleaner is amazing as they were caked in dirty grease and that stuff cleans it up quick.. Don't use it on aluminum..

Helped my son - we changed the oil in both his and his fiancé’s vehicles. He did most of the work and led the process. I’m so proud of him, and still worry for his common sense and safety. He’s always had the aptitude for the knack but things were also hard for him to connect in certain ways, although he is readily smarter than I am and more disciplined at his age. His eye for safety, to this dad, is inexperienced. We probably have two years of this in my garage before he might have his own.

Our learning curve is that his 4Runner skid plate came off quickly but he wrestled with for a while to reinstall. I finally peeked down there and asked, “did you happen to maybe use the skid plate recently?” “Oh yeah.” He dug it in on something, just mildly deforming it. We opened up the mount holes a bit and it went on.

My wife did a rare thing and cleaned out my truck, knowing we might go look at a trade in a week. She has never cleaned out my vehicle before. I was really touched by it.

Sprayed the seats in her car down with McGuires leather conditioner. I let them soak for a while before rubbing it in and toweling it off. It’s not real leather but had been picking up oils and lotions. I thought maybe letting a known good thing soak in uniformly first might be good. Pleather?

Did a high speed / low effort mow, ran the string trimmer around the house. Grass wasn’t high.

Excellent workout with some friends Saturday morning.

Penzoil platinum was used in all vehicles this weekend.

Started a 60k service on my 2020 Tundra this afternoon. Changed fluids in rear diff, brake system and power steering system. Used Harbor Freight Holt brake bleed kit, which is really a fluid extractor, for brakes and power steering. Worked like a champ. Got super frustrated when my brake fluid reservoir cap decided to leave this dimension and join all my left socks somewhere. This made me not only retired, but tired. 🤬 Local stealership said they could have one for me in the morning for $16, so I relented since no one online could beat the price or have next day service. Tomorrow will be front diff, transfer case, transmission drain and fill, and tire rotation as well as a plain old oil change. I plan to keep track of things that might run away a little better too. Time for a beer or three.

If you ever find it and your socks, you'll also have a bunch of 10mm sockets.

Also if you didn't find this in your rear diff, you're doing alright!

No doubt on the 10mm! I bought one of those grab bag of those a while ago, lol.

I was a bad boy and didn't do it at 30k like I should have. This is what I found. From what I hear/read this is pretty normal. Doesn't concern me in the slightest with this vehicle. I refilled with Ravenol 75W-85 and I plan on doing it again in 30k just to see what it looks like then. The OE fluid did not look too bad really for the mileage. I don't tow much and I am pretty easy on my vehicles as far as how I drive. I have not been having any trouble with the rear diff other than a very slight slip every once and a while when accelerating from a stop; but that could be the transmission. When I say slight, I mean no one but me would even notice if they drove my truck, but I know how she should act and feel. Something tells/feels like it was the diff though. I'm sure you know what I mean. That seems to be gone now on my test drive to get my beer reward though.

Got it all together.. My Front Derailleur was a bit jacked and needed some tweaking and bending, but I figured it out..

I had that same frame - it was the last chromoly steel frame I owned before going to the triple triangle aluminum offering of the time. It rode like butter. I remember stripping it down to bare metal and painting it up with “grape” metallic. Sure it chipped with rock abuse but it was still undeniably purple. I finally sold it years later as a bare frame with headset and a rock shock, having bought a used GT Zaskar frame. Giant made and makes good bikes. Nice job with yours - it’s immaculate.

Mowed and trimmed the yard. Finally used the tire dismounter bought last year at HF. Wasn’t bad at all done in 30 minutes, granted they were 13’s. Might try the truck tires sometime. Now need to clean up and paint. Thinking about balance beads, really tired of tire shops.

A local off-road buddy of mine swears by beads, but I've heard mixed reviews elsewhere. Did you ever watch the vid of the guy who sticks a GoPro in his wheel to watch the beads? I found it a very interesting perspective

And I'm in the same boat -- would love to get away from tire shops. Just tired of the scheduling, attitudes from counter people, lectures about TPMS etc

Seen it but been a while. My problem is no one can balance a tire. They don’t measure or anything… simply don’t care.

A friend tried them for fun in a wrangler with 37s. He didn’t keep them. He said they were great on the straights. They had to “reset” with some shaking out at every start. If steering, they got all wonky during turns. I’d not heard of steering issues with them in other reviews, but based on that I’m thinking a few beads on top of a balance might be ok, if they even do that?

Diagnosed the Tundra yesterday and confirmed the engine and turbo is toasted. We are just going to replace the truck because the engine and turbo are months out and almost the value of the truck to replace them. Customer gets to pick one out with the same trim package as well as tons of coupons and all of that good stuff. The truck will most likely go to auction as is. For those who don’t know our lube tech left the drain plug loose on Monday and it came out on I-77 near the Virginia-West Virginia state line on the Virginia side of the East River Mountain Tunnel and got towed back in. I posted that part in the what are you doing thread. This is about his 18th car he has damaged in some way. At least 16 of those times it has had to have a tow truck bring it back. Thank goodness his last day was today supposed to have been Friday. He had a car towed back in again today for two loose wheels on one side. He tried to blame his partner for everything saying it was all their fault. They told him just to go that they didn’t need him anymore. He came crying to me wanting me to beg them for his job back I’m like I’m not asking for your job back because for one thing it won’t matter and two your beyond incompetent. He went on and on and eventually he realized that they were serious and nobody was going to help him with getting his job back for two days. Also done a flat repair, couple oil changes and small things. Also got that Corolla pulled in and checked to make sure there was no damage to anything as well as checked the oil drain plug and filter for good measure and surprisingly both were tight but he failed to torque two of the wheels. Not much big work going on this work.
