Sitting in a coffee shop in the Orlando area, listening to (many) Hispanics jibber jabbing in Spanish. Thought I was in a Third World Country Miami/Dade County even worse
I am First Generation AMERICAN. My parents emigrated here from Europe They came here because they WANTED TO BE AMERICANS. When in public, they spoke ENGLISH (yes with an accent). Only in private, with family, would they revert to their native language if only one person was around that did not speak that language, they would speak ENGLISH as a courtesy. They have now passed on many years ago.
That's what I'm listening to right now.
BTW, I also can speak that "second" language, but the only time I do is if I meet up with other first or second generation Americans, just for practice and only if there is nobody around that can't understand.
Oh, almost forgot. I have cousins in AUSTRALIA, and although we speak English on the phone, sometimes I won't understand his Australian accent, or he mine) so we revert to our parents native language. His language and dialect is exactly the same as mine.
