Overkill, are some/all members of 5FDP war veterans? I notice most of their vids/songs strongly reference servicemen but I was unable to find any info on that?

No, but they are huge supporters of those that serve and have served. They've done a ton of charity work for veterans and have also played for the service folk on tour.

Samaritanmag chatted with guitarist Zoltan Bathory about the inspiration behind the "Wrong Side of Heaven," which is from their 2013 release, The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of [censored] Volume 1, the video campaign, and their passion to help veterans.

Where does your support of the military, and especially veterans with PTSD, stem from?

"I was born on a military base [in Hungary] and grew up on a military base because both of my parents were in the military. They were high-ranking officers and so my younger years, I was surrounded by soldiers at all times and it did affect the way I looked at things. Once I was living in America, I guess it stayed with me. I always respected these guys. They are signing up for something that nobody else really wants to do. Any of us goes to work every day and you don't think, well, today I may die. But they do that every day. They put their lives on the line and I think a lot of people just take that for granted. They are a very special kind of person who is willing to do that job."

Including war imagery in songs and playing for the troops is nothing new, but Five Finger Death Punch takes it a step further by employing a slew of veterans in their shows, tours, and other material.

They raise money for PTSD awareness through a merchandise site, which also offers links to get help. They even help U.S. combat vets fight poachers in Africa. Their affection for veterans earned them the Soldier Appreciation Award from the Association of the United States Army and dog tags donated from their military-veteran fans to adorn their "Wall of Heroes" and soaring album sales from the troops who love them.

Beyond writing songs for troops and performing in USO tours, Five Finger Death Punch is there for veterans long after they get out of the military.

Thanks for the info, and good on them!

When I did a bit of searching last night I came across this about Zolton. After reading it I definitely thought he was a veteran and likely some of the other members as well.

"Personal life
In his private life Zoltán is a martial artist,[4] judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner often appearing in martial art magazines. He is on the Gracie Humaita Competition Team, affiliated with Professor Amilcar Cipili (4th Degree)[5] and 7th Degree Black Belt Royler Gracie[5] Zoltán won the silver medal at the Abu-Dhabi Pro Jiu-Jitsu World Trials, and The North American Grappling Championship, Placed 3rd at the 2012 Masters World Championship in his division.[6] He is one of the few civilians certified by the US Army as an L1 Modern Army Combatives Instructor - Close Quarter Combat.[7] Zoltan also practices Wing Chun Kung-Fu under World Renowned Sifu Randy Williams C.R.C. Academy and Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu under professor John Simons III. In May 2014 Zoltan has joined Monster Jam Free Style World Champion Jimmy Creten's Monster Truck Racing Team 2Xtreme Racing as their driver[8] behind the wheel of the new "Knucklehead" truck.[9] Zoltan's professional debut took place in California at the WGAS Motorsport Flip Fest Monster Truck and Motocross Show. Zoltan raced at Florida's EastBay Race Way, Kansas City Speedway, Newfoundland Raceway in Canada, and appeared at the 2015. Monster Jam Finals in Las Vegas.[10]

I bet members of the audience think twice about jumping up on the stage knowing this about Zolton.

Zoltan is a pretty cool guy, yeah. He's got an amazing gun collection too, I think he's got it on youtube if you search for it.

Jason Hook, the other guitarist (lead), is Canadian BTW

Born in Toronto, Ivan made a point to mention that during the concert in Toronto, it was pretty awesome. You should go see them the next time they are in Toronto, they put on the best concert I've ever been to.

I didn't know that.

I've been listening to them a lot more now after our last conversation about them and I am liking them more and more so I may just do that the next time they are around.
My gut tells me I will be flying solo however as I honestly can't see my wife going with me.

I'd like to take my son, which might have a slight chance of happening, but due to him currently being into Rap, I have my doubts.

I'd definitely go with you, and I can think of a few other friends of mine that would go.

Yeah, they are an amazing band. I've seen a few heavy bands in concert, and while Rammstein was amazing (2nd place in my books), 5FDP still gets the nod for the best show. It was the most intimate concert with a "big band" that I've ever been to. Don't know if you've ever been to the Sound Academy but it's a relatively small venue with an only slightly elevated stage. Myself and two friends were third row. The energy and honesty that they put into their performance? I've never seen that from any other band. They legitimately wanted you there to feel their music and to resonate with every single member of that audience. And we were electric. It was a level of feedback I've never experienced before or after.

Youtube "Five Finger Death Punch Sound Academy" and the concert from like 9 years ago, we were there

Good to know.

I may just take you up on that offer sometime. Thanks.

Personally, like my wife, I am not sure if any of my friends would go or not?

I had a close friend who passed about 5yrs ago now who would have went in a heartbeat. Him and I loved the heavy/hard rock like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, The Scorpions, and Black Sabbath to name a few.
