Back in the 80s we met this guy who left this tape at a friends apartment. It was a tape he made of 60s 45 and lp cuts. He never came back for his tape. He just disappeared. This song was on it. I had no idea what it was at the time, and one day I found a mono pressing of it

Yep, 1968. Apparently the mono pressing is hard to find. I think I read on the Steve Hoffman forums that it was the very last Philips label mono lp ever made, then everything went to stereo only. Sounds much better than the stereo pressing.
