Just as a footnote, batard means in French what it almost sounds like in English. It also means a short or oblong loaf. During its evolution French has often dropped the letter s where it was silent in French. That's how Old French word bastard became batard. I suggest the French should also drop the letter d at the end of batard because that's also silent.
