Tell your friend to contact the researchers and find out whether or not they went by the standard definition of obese as exceeding 25% or 30% body fat, depending on gender.

The graphic depicts people with average musculature and not outliers like bodybuilders or weightlifters and other athletes. The graphic is a representation of the BMI of people of average build. I put that graphic in only as a visual aid, a rough guide of sorts for the layman.
