What am I doing wrong with 1/4" compression union

Ok...when it comes to plumbing I obviously do not have the knack...a section of the plastic tubing for my ice maker has split and started leaking. What my plan was to find out where the leak was, cut it out and join the 2 pieces of the hose back together. Wasn't sure how that would be done. Went to Lowes...talked to the guy in that department and he directed me to the 1/4" compression union. Said that is what I needed to mate the 2 pieces of tubing together.

Sounds easy enough right?? Well yesterday I cut the bad piece of tubing out, put one end through the nut and the little inner sleeve(forgot what this is called) and did the same to the other side and screwed both ends to the middle "union" I did NOT use the little inserts that look they they fir in the plastic tube. I then proceeded to tight the bejesus out of each side...and I mean crank. Everything seemed nice and tight until about 6 this morning when the tube on the fridge side decided to pop out from the nut and create an instant mini flood...thankfully my stepson was up and had enough insight to turn off the supply that feeds the ice maker...that could have been bad!

Talked to a coworker who has some plumbing experience and said I probably tightend too much and crushed the plastic down creating pressure which forced the hose out......said you only need to tighten it finger tight and then give it a turn or so with the wrench


Ok so I think I know what I am doing...go buy another union....I do the same procedure but this time I use the inserts (guy at Ace said I should with the plastic tubing) I hand tighten and then crank a little bit on the bolt as directed bu friend and Ace guy. Turn on water and I'm getting leaking out on end of the bolt(the one that has the water flow going to it) So I turn off water and tighten a bit more...still leaking good

When undid the bolts I can see that the little inner sleeve was a bit cockeyed on both tubes...they were both set back about an 1/8 of an inch from the end of each tube but they are locked down on the insert inside tube)


Ok what am I doing wrong?

I've tried both ways and the overtighten time did not leak at first but blew the end off of half of union...second time it leaked as soon as I put water on


Is there a trick I am missing?


Hopefully I didn't confuse or bore anyone with details...just trying to be thorough...I'm on my way to HD for another union....can someone with plumbing experience maybe help this non plumbing guy out??

I have found you have to be very careful about how the sleeves line up (exactly with the tube) or it will leak no matter how tight you make it.

Ok just noticed that on the Home Depot unions that the little sleeve is attached to the inside of the bolt unlike the one I got from Ace...hence the cockeyed sleeve and leak probably...you think if I do the same thing with the Home Depot union and use the inserts this time and don't overtighten it should work? (in theory at least)

I hate plastic tubing. Any way you could use the braided flex hoses they sell? Those things work great under sinks and for toilet supply lines. Not sure of your situation, of course, so I'm not sure they could be used.
 
I was recently wrestling with a compression fitting between the toilet supply line and fill valve. What a piece of junk. The fitting contained a conical rubber compression washer. I did replace that garbage with a braided flex hose.

No teflon tape. That isn't where the fitting seals. Use new parts carefully lined up and don't overtighten and all should be well.
 
I quit using compression fittings on plastic tube. I use the push-lock type now. Just cut the plastic tube square and push it into the fitting. Done.
 
Ok think I got it...time will tell I guess....The one that leaked looked like the one pictured above...the HD one has the sleeve attached to the bolt so it is always straight. Put the inserts in, slid the bolt and sleeve over the tube and attached one at a time...using a 11 open wrench to hold union and a 13 to tighten...I pushed the tube with insert in as tight as I could to union and made finger tight. The I turned a half or so with wrench..tugged a little on the tube and it pulled back a bit...pushed in and used wrench to tighten about another turn so that tube is nice and tight in there. Did so on other side as well...turned on water and no leaks so far...I even detached hose at fridge to make sure water is coming through....made a bit of a mess but water is coming out......


What are the odds that this will pop off again? Less now that I have the inserts in there for the sleeve to grab onto? I may not be as lucky and have someone home again as I was this morning.....

If it was gonna leak it would do it by now no? An odd thought just crossed my feeble mind...is is ok to have those inserts in there for water to go over for ice cubes? Health wise that is

I fought one of those recently too. I forget some of the details, but I end up buying a new chromed brass tube. That toilet is accessible to the puppies, and I am afraid they would chew one of the braided hoses. I did risk a metal braided hose on one of the upstairs ones.

In general, I have never had much luck with compression fittings. Quite often I am attempting to put something old back together, and they always seem to leak.
 
The fitting that I removed was probably 40 years old, an original part from back when the house was built. The rubber cone washer crumbled when I extracted it from the fitting. I don't care much for compression fittings either. The flex hose that I bought was made of stainless steel braided over nylon tubing. I'm sure a determined dog could chew through it!
 
Old plastic may leak. It gets hard and stiff.
You may be best with new lines.

Those inserts help with collapse of the line - IMO you gotta have them.
Overtightening will warp things and may it leak, also.
 
Yeah I will run a new line eventually but it is like a 50 foot run down through the floor through garage into basement...previous owner put the water feed in a weird spot...well no leaks so far but I may have created a new problem


I undid the bolt where it connects to the fridge like a tard with the water turned on...yep! Water coming through! In my haste to get it back on I may have overtightened that connection as without thinking I cranked it down probably too much. Water is still flowing to the ice cube maker but it is only filling it halfway with water maybe? Is that normal? Also while I turned the maker off by putting hinge in off position I think I might have trashed something in the motor part..it started to go down (to spit out ice) and my hand hit it while it was in motion..forcing it back up...ugh are these delicate machines that you can burn out by messing with the arm while in motion?

I only got like 15 ice cubes in 15 or so hours so that concerns me a bit that A) I've restricted the water supply or B) I've messed up the motor somehow


Keep me away from this stuff..I am dangerous to it's health

Popped off again...luckily it happened with someone home....pulling the whole line out this weekend and running a new one...no more messing around
