Whale Collides With Fishing Boat

For the last two weeks, I have been seeing lots of whales breaching and periscoping. It's best to keep a few hundred feet distance when in or on the water. While they don't harm humans on purpose, their size and mass can be destructive.

In the early 70's in L.A., went fishing just off the shore in a rental 14' boat. Many times saw whales breaching and jumping out of the water just outside the kelp beds. Needless to say, these boaters left the area in great haste! Never saw one land on a boat though.

That went viral! Note the guy that got flung off portside. Someone needs to add a Wilhelm scream. 😁

Like andrew_j, this is Local for me too.
I was concerned as my shop partner has been out fishing the past couple weeks, but he was down near Seabrook.
You might say he was Nucular (sic) Fission.
He reeled in a couple bigguns but not that big.
Bigger boat indeed!

The boaters should have had a marine biologist onboard.

Anyway, that looked kind of painful for the whale I presume.

That's when common sense was still around. No the boaters would get closer so they could take selfies.
No one took selfies….the boats were anchored fishing and whale breached once and then did this shortly after. Kid just happened to pull out phone as he thought possibly it could do it again. The spot obviously is great spot to fish if you can see all the boats in background beyond the whale chasing them.

We just had a pod of dolphins alongside us just outside of Cuttyhunk. Seen whales from a good distance and always try to keep it that way, for all involved.
