GMAN, I did watch mantic59's videos - in all honesty, it seems that I'm doing it right.

Give it time then. Try different blades and always make sure you keep the head of the razor at the same angle through the stroke. Use just enough pressure to hold the razor against your face.

Preparation is just as important. Unless you've just gotten out of the shower, wash your beard thoroughly with soap and hot water. Wet a wash cloth with HOT water and hold it to your beard for a couple of minutes, then wet your beard again before applying your shave cream of choice. Shave once with the grain, rinse, and re-hydrate. Re-apply shave cream, shave across the grain. Rinse and re-hydrate. Re-apply shave cream and shave against the grain. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry and then splash your face with ICE COLD water to close the pores and then apply an aftershave balm.

My beard is light so I can do it once with the grain and call it good. That's gives me a much closer shave than any I got with an electric over the past 27 years. And now I only need to shave once every three days...

Nice!

I need to shave every day or else the better half starts complaining that she's getting scratched

. I do take a break day now and then though.

I'm sure the better half is grateful for the occasional one-day break.

Jon, I use a Fatboy, Super Adjustables, a newly acquired Merkur FUTUR. Seems like some "ol" Veteran beat me to a great deal on a Fatboy razor at the flea makert West of Paw Paw Michigan. Got 3 razors for $10.00 IMAGINE that!!

Elsewhere, I'm known as Gibbs. *smiling*

I recently tried using a safety razor and cut the tip of my right index finger off picking the [censored] thing up. That's as far as I got. I have this stupid familial tremor that runs on my mom's side of the family and sometimes get a bad shake in my hands. That's what ended my last attempt at carving a nice beard...

After about a week of DE blade shaving, I put it away and went back to my old Fusion razor. My skin was getting seriously irritated by DE blade and would pain for hours after a shave. It's definitely not for me. I can get a perfect shave with Fusion and less risk of getting cut as well.

Art of Shaving Pre-Shave oil is also helping achieve a good shave. Their shaving creams are OK too (try the Lavender one if you have sensitive skin). Although my favorite shaving cream is still Proraso/CO Bigelow.

Sure. PM me with your offer. I have a whole pack of various blade samples, too that I'll include in the deal.

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but for you guys that have used the Edwin Jagger DE89/86, is it slippery in your hand since it doesn't have any texture on the handle? How does it compare to the Merkurs? Thanks! By the way, I know some of you guys like using the Shave Secret oil for preshave. I love the stuff, but they decided to triple the price. I found this and gave it a try and it works wonderfully.

With the grain first, then against the grain.

If you have a heavy beard like I do, I go with, then across, then against...makes for a really close shave!

I recently bought my first DE and got the EJ with the textured handle.

Recently made the switch to a DE razor and will never go back!. I get such nice comfy shaves now and its a relaxing morning ritual. I use a Merkur 34C aka HD razor and I'm cycling through a sample pack of blades. So far I actually like the Wilkinson Sword stainless blades best. As for soaps I've only tried Williams mug soap and Proraso white (sensitive) with an omega boar brush. The Proraso is much better.

I've found that after I learned the technique (keep wrist straight, no pressing down, preparation) I really started to experience the benefits of wet shaving. My first few attempts were a bit irritated and painful.

I'm already feeling the need to hoard razors, blades and soaps not unlike an oil hoarding addiction. Oh boy.

My favorite is the Schick Extreme 3; you can get a 25 pack at Sams club for 20 bucks. I get 5 shaves out of each razor.
