Wet Shaving

Merkur Progress (short)...Wilkinson blades.

If I've got time, I'll use a shaving mug (old enamelled steel mug filled with grated sunlight soap, various oils (coconut and olive, with a dash of tea tree)). Multiple passes with the grain, lathering between.

Weekdays use a shaving oil after a hot shower, one with, one against.

Absolutely. Don't forget using a shaving brush as well as a DE razor or straight blade exfoliates the skin. Abnormal cells may be removed when shaving. Research indicates this may reduce the chance of getting skin cancer-unless you slice off moles, of course.

Been there, done that. Nothing gives as close a shave as a good DE razor, properly used.

My Edwin Jagger arrived. I shaved with it (and a Derby blade) for the first time this morning. The skin feels quite a bit irritated/burning afterwards and I can't really tell that I've gotten a closer shave than with a regular Gillette Fusion razor which gives me no irritation at all. Maybe I need to get used to it... I'll try it a few more times to see if things improve.

Did you shave with the grain?

I would strongly urge you to go to YouTube and watch the videos of mantic59 and geofatboy. You absolutely can NOT shave with a double edge safety razor the same way you use a cartridge razor. You have to learn the correct technique and how to control the angle of the blade or you will always be disappointed with the results.

Why do you guys shave? Is there a specific reason other than yourself - like a job, significant other's request, etc?

Just curious. I have a beard at the request of my wife.

Thats why I quite using them, useless pieces of garbage that the marketing folks have talked us into.

Don't knock it till you've tried it and know what you're doing.

I live in No. Indiana's Amish country. No further explaination should be necessary.

Electric razors don't work very well for me. I like these 5-bladed razors. Work great, just soap up the area in the shower, and shave away. Never get a cut with the 5-blade razor. I did get cut with a cheaper 3-blade razor.

For DE razors, you need to try many different brands of blades to find the one that works well for you. My favorite are the Feather blades with my Feather razor. They are sharper than other blades that I've tried so they don't tug my hair as much.

I served 7 years in the Army and just feel dirty/greasy if I don't shave on a regular basis. My wife actually likes some stubble, so I usually only shave every few days.

I also keep my hair very short and having any hair over my ears just drives me crazy.

I knew I'd hear some good ones.

I'm no expert, heck I just started myself since Feb. But I recommend only with the grain until you get more comfortable with DE shaving. The instructions that came with my Jagger said to only shave with the grain period, FWIW. And remember, don't use pressure!

The problem with only shaving with the grain is that you don't get a close enough shave. Just not close enough for me.

GMAN, I did watch mantic59's videos - in all honesty, it seems that I'm doing it right.
