Well, with the wife getting laid off and Christmas coming I went for the best deals for this round of OCI's. The F150 got the Mobil 1 0w40 dumped and Motorcraft 5w20 with MC filter. The VW got the Castrol Syntec dumped and got good ol' Pennzoil Conventional 5w30!

I won't run either more than a 5k mile OCI so I hope they do OK!

Money's tight here as well, Jeep needed an oil change. I had the $15 5 quart jug of Castrol GTX in my hand, then put it back down for a $12 5 quart jug of Super Tech 5w30, then an additinal quart of Super Tech 5w-20. Figured I saved about $15 over a regular oil change!

I also stopped using Mobil 1 0w-20 in my Car, switched it back to MC 5w-20 syn blend.

If it matters, I'm running the MC 5-20 with MC or P1 filter in my 04 F-150. Has worked well for me so far.

I'm a bit concerned about an API/ILSAC rated oil in the VW though. Maybe 10W-40 would have been a better option?

That's easy to say however first you would need to analyze the mc oil to establish how long the tbn will run,then test the mobil 1 and see how long it can go safely,then do the math on which is a better value.
If a person was to go that route Amsoil would be a better value simply because the top shelf stuff is supposed to be good for 25000 miles,10000 more than Mobil 1 Extended Performance.
And in order to get all this data it would cost money,and since the op is putting oil back that only costs a few dollars more spending money on uoa likely isn't in the budget.

These two oil will do an excellent job at keeping your engines in top shape, don't think that you're compromising on anything.
Here is the thread where I posted pics of my 2003 Focus with 80k miles. It been fed a steady diet of MC 5w20 and as you can see it is as clean inside as it can get.

Those of us with a remaining warranty have to follow what the book says. Once my Focus is out of warranty, I'm going to go 10k synthetic and 5k filter changes.

Why change the oil filter at 5K, it should be possible to find an oil filter that is good for 10K if for some odd reason the OEM filters is not. Clean filters are no where near as efficient as dirty ones.

Even though the economy is slowly inching forward, people are still getting laid off.
I think you've selected good oils for the applications you'll run them in.
Is the VW wifey's car?
Is it the 2.slow?
The old 2.0 should be just fine with the oil you've used.
I'd be a little worried with a 1.8T.
This is also why it's nice to have a variety of oils in a stash you accumulate on the cheap.
When things are tight, you have plenty of stock to use and the current retail price of oil is of no concern.
