Weird random no starton my Neon

If you have two Neon keys on your keychain they may be interfering with each other and the immobilizer can't get a good read.

So my dad and I dug in some yesterday and I'm seeing shoddy NOT OEM crimp connectors etc. The shift sensor from what I can find is in the transmission. I'm going to run some electrical tests to see if the relay, starter etc is getting power. I'm really hacked at how terrible and unprofessional the last shop did on the last job. The used to be good.

I separated the keys and still nothing. However a local different shop owner was really nice and even let me borrow a couple of tools. Apparently the prndl switch /sensor goes bad. If it's that an atf fluid change and filter plus instead of installing a new idle air control valve he might be able to make the system "relearn ". He quoted me around $500 plus or minus a couple hundred just in case but likely out the door near $500. The last shop that I used apparently has gone downhill and doesn't have competent staff nor managers. Fingers crossed.

That's a bummer but a heck of a step closer.

If the wiring is hacked, I wonder if you can hack it a hair more, if you don't want to spend the money today. As in, figure out what wires need to be jumped to bypass the switch. You could wire up a momentary switch across the problem lines. If decides to act up, push the button. That way, if you loan the car out, there's no risk of someone trying to start while in drive or reverse (but if you push the button while in drive/reverse, well, I got a sign I'd like to sell you :) ).

This switch I don't think has to carry much current, it's likely all low voltage/current, so any momentary switch would be fine.

I accidentally found a great local garage about two miles from my house. The guy has a shop behind his house with three employees plus his dad as the counter guy. He Diagnosed it to a pin in the ignition that broke. Apparently it makes contact and starts the starter turning over the engine. Now I had read that the key sensor can go bad and had thought that maybe it was ignition related. The mechanic started my car and was able to drive it into the service bay. Unfortunately if the prndl sensor goes bad it's bolted inside the transmission meaning a fluid replacement and taking the transmission apart. So instead of $500-$1000 I'm looking at $375-$400. I went ahead and told them to change the transmission fluid and filter while they have it.

If the gear switch is starting to go bad you can usually still start by shifting to N instead of P. Did you ever try that?

Switches can be tested from outside with an ohmmeter.

It would start in N but not always. I'll have to add a picture as a local mechanic diagnosed it as a broken cylinder or tumbler that the key goes in. Apparently they're cheap pot metal and have been known to break. I suspected the possibility of an ignition sensor but not that.
