Weeping bottles: presence of esters?

I've got two open bottles of oil in my closet: Castrol Edge 0w40 and Eneos Sustina 0w50. Both bottles are over half-full but of course capped. I have noticed that these bottles "weep" down the side despite being stored upright. If I wipe them down, they seem to get covered in oil again within a day or two.

Should I interpret that as the presence of an ester? I remember MolaKule once commenting that esters are their own surfactants, or something like that. Neither product's MSDS lists anything beyond just the typical "highly refined base oil".

What else can we learn about an oil if it always leaks from its container?

Every jug/bottle of opened oil I've ever had has done that.

Just looked at my stash of jugs. Mobil 1 High Mileage and PU weeping. Mobil 1 0w40 and PP not weeping.

Not mine. Don't recall it on Lubro-Moly Synthoil Premium 5w40 or Castrol Edge 5w40.

Is it a particular component of the oil that is moving up through this capillary action? The surface energy of oil with the bottle may be less than of oil with air, so the oil will try to maximize the area of contact with the bottle and minimize it with the air. Gravity obviously opposes that.

Yeah, looks like what I'm seeing. Its all the open ones. Just dug out a jug of 0w20 from the back I can't use. Its been open the longest, weeping the worst.

I have my oil inside my house in a closet and I have all kinds of open bottles of PP PU M1 EdgeFST, Edge Syntec and none of them "weep". You guys are crazy

My 1gal jug of Rotella T 15w40 mineral oil weeps like that, too. I doubt there is any ester in it.

I've stored a lot of opened oil in the original bottle. My impression is that the oil seep has as much to do with oil clinging to the threads of the bottle and cap before the cap is tightened than it does with ester. However, I know that I don't know.

It`s just probably the residual oil left around the neck and in the cap from pouring that slowly trickles down the sides.

I have seen oil bottles leak on the seam that used to be on the clear level indicator section. But they were really old.

Haha that`s what all the ancient bottles in O`Reilly and Autozone look like here :^P

I have an old 2-stroke quart that does that.
I should buy a Ball canning jar and pour contents into that. Glass breaks, but it doesn't weep.

This. It's trace amounts of oil left in the cap and cap threads on the bottle.
