Weed trimmer brand

Hi folks..

With snow barely on the ground.. im already prepping for spring/summer chores..

I need a new weed trimmer for the cottage, straight shaft, so I can put a blade on and trim the mile long road-way.

I’m done with Sthil… not going there anymore.

I have a Husqy chain saw and a curved shaft trimmer which was inadequate for the cottage, it has been relocated for home use. They have served me well, the trimmer starting to bogg a little, but its 9 years old, maybe need a small adjustment.

I was thinking at another Husky, but I hearing good comments about Echo..

Looking for your thoughts and recommendations Plz

Yes Maruyama is a good brand, commercial quality stuff. BUT, unless you have a dealer close, probably hard to find parts etc. My vote is for an Echo. Also commercial quality, but usually very easy to get parts and service for, which in my experience you will rarely need.
 
Can’t go wrong with Echo. Quality products backed with five year warranties. Take a look at the SRM-225, very reasonably priced ($200, when on sale), plenty of power to cut through reeds, tall grass, and vines but is fuel efficient enough that you aren’t filling it as frequently as the more powerful units.
 
Don't know what your problem is with Stihl, I have a shed full of Stihl tools. A chainsaw and a straight shaft string trimmer(blade capable) both date from the mid 80's and are still going strong. I think the only thing mechanical done was to replace air filters, and a worn bar on the chain saw. I have always used alcohol free gas, and switched to the Stihl synthetic oil as soon as it came available.
 
My Echo SRM-225 has been flawless. A few years old now. I use it about 60 minutes at a time. Once a week in spring. I have no idea how many hours on it . Bought a shoulder strap, that seems to help me out. Very good fuel use, IMHO. Easy starts. Have not used a brush cutter blade, only use it as a string trimmer. I have never regretted buying this Echo for one second. And would buy another if I ever have to. I do not cut lawns for a living, so this seems fine for my use.

Thx for the suggestion... not a brand im familiar with, a quick search indicate one possible dealer... and he's not that close to me.

Has the quality of Stihl gone down over the years? I have a gas trimmer and blower that are almost 20 years old and still work great.
Need a chainsaw I'm tired of my electric. Maybe I should stay away from Stihl.

How old are your Stihl and what kind of problems do you have? Hard to start?
 
Echo seem to last forever for home use. I don’t even know how old mine is. Lost count. The California gas in the past few years makes the carburetor leak after a while but a replacement is like $10. Probably just the needle /seat but not worth the hassle.

I suspect it has... ive found a few vids on how home users/contractors alike are shying away from Stihl... yes, i know.. they are opinions, and i will do my best to make heads or tails of what you find on the net.
My FS38 worked ok at the beginning, hard starting was always prevalent, then got progressively worse over the last few years...
Done reg maintenance, even switch to either VP, TrueFuel and even Aspen2 gas..[ its expensive ..but i like it..]

Spent some time and $$ on carb kits, seals, etc it was all crap.. then got an entire new carb.. work ok, at best, for 2 months.. then right back to square 1..
at that point , i realized that i have 2 curved shaft trimmers, when i need a straight shaft one for the cottage...
The decision was easy, ditch the Stihl and get a new one for up north..
 
I always recommend Echo for string trimmers. If you're going to put a blade on it, don't get the bottom of the line Echo. Those blades are hard on equipment. It's funny, I always recommend Echo, but most customers bring in their brand new MTD, McCullough, Craftsman, Weedeater, etc to me a few weeks after ignoring my advice because they don't work. Surprise, surprise!

I had a weedeater brand back in the early 80's that got to the point where it vibrated so much it was hurting. I gave it away and got a bicycle handle Stihl which I am still using.
 
My Stihl is an edger or weed eater with string ... I called it a trimmer. But mine has 1 bicycle handle some have 2 handles I think.

My trimmer is electric and I've cut the extension cord 3 times so far. lol
Every year I remind myself to be careful but sometimes it happens!
