Waymo goes through police standoff.

Having been a deputy sheriff, this Wayno isn't doing anything less than I'd expect from a human driver, e.g.ignoring commands, driving around barricades, etc.

Spoiler alert: At least it didn't run over the guy lying prone next to his vehicle.

Truer words never spoken.

Throw some flashing lights out there and people do all kinds of dumb stuff.

'Who, me?'

e.g.ignoring commands, driving around barricades, etc

Trust me, this phenomenon is worldwide..I was a police officer here in Australia for over 20yrs..the amount of times I had roads closed for collisions/crime scenes etc..all with barricades/tape and a marked police car with a message on the back of the roof mounted light bar flashing ‘road closed’….only to have a heap of morons pull up alongside me and ask ‘is the road closed?..’

I often felt like saying ‘no..I’m just here for the fun of it’…but knowing these clowns, they probably would have then tried to drive around..or through it…

Then of course you have the ones ignoring you when you’re stuck doing point duty..trying to direct them to go a certain way..only for them to frantically point in the opposite direction (the way they want to go)…despite it being blatantly obvious that they cannot..’yeah sure lady, I’m just waving my arms around here because I’m creating a new dance..I’m not really trying to tell you which way you must go..’

I really don’t miss those people..

Preach brother. I could write a book about all the dumb things I've seen people do around me when the lights go on. A big, thick book. Shows that artificial intelligence ain't all that smart sometimes.
We hear people complaining all the time about police who are "speeding". Often the safest way to get somewhere quickly when on a call is to NOT run lights and siren, if the situation warrants it. Most people are relatively predictable in traffic and you can quickly work around them. Turn on the overheads, and especially hit the siren, and predictability goes out the window. The worst are those who hit their brakes right in front of you without attempting to move over.

In San Francisco, I have encountered so many Waymos in congested traffic. The software tweaks ovee the past few months are easily apparent. When cars "block the box" Waymos now aggressively whip around them. Just like human drivers. LOL.

There are times I'm glad I don't get a county car. Rolling incognito in my POV is nice, don't have everyone going nuts on Facebook if I touch a yellow line.

You should see Facebook light up when I'm monitoring the radio from my comfy office and one of the patrol guys has to go 'Code 2'.

Code 2 - In our county this is basically obeying the speed limits, but using lights to get through intersections.

OMG, people lose their ****ed minds.

'THIS DEPUTY RAN LIGHTS THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AND THEN TURNED THEM RIGHT BACK OFF #$%@#$%@#%!@#$%@#!' KILL HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The patrol guys usually don't bother, you can either take your time to get there or run full on Code to get there.

Yeah - I mentioned the other day that a Toyota sedan self destructed on the back of a big Ford Expedition right in front of my house …
Even with FD, PD, EMS, flat beds - fluids and SpeedyDry all over the road - car after car was trying to get by the chaos with many other ways to leave …
I finally put cones on my grass just so they’d use my 3 wide driveway to turn around …

A great opportunity for Waymo to add some AI learning when road blocked by multiple sirens to alert the human back at Mission Control to intervene. I don’t see it as big deal at all.

This is why Elon made his truck bulletproof

Great common sense move!, everyone on scene would have very much appreciated that! 👏 👌

Yep. The most human thing an autonomous driving car can do is make stupid mistakes.
My guess is, the best self driving cars are better than drivers now. No speeding, running red lights, being upset cuz wifey ragged on you, drink and drive, text, you name it.

Having said that, our M3P has FSD Supervised; I rarely use it. I'm not ready and I enjoy driving the car.

So, why autonomous driving?

My understanding is, car companies are developing autonomous cars for safety, customer demand and, of course, competition.

From a business standpoint, autonomous driving is expected to be worth billion$ annually; there is massive financial opportunity.
For the consumer, if it works well enough, you could get time back enabling productivity.
For the mobility challenged population, it could change their lives.

I have it but don't use it all that much. Some seem to swear by it.

My gripe is IF and thats a big if they do become safer than humans driving the insurance companies will come for your drivers license. Tesla and others claim they're safer but I just don't see it when they release the accident rates.
