Washington DC (DCA) accident

Scary. I can’t count the number of times I’ve landed at DCA. Reports are saying both aircraft are in the river.
Same. It is super busy airspace. Considering amount of close calls last several years, unfortunately, not surprising.

I was coming into DCA on a bright clear afternoon about 15 years ago. We were over the runway and close enough to read signs on the ground when all of a sudden the pilot shoved the engines up to full power and made a hard climbing turn. I closed my eyes and gripped the armrests hard enough to choke a Sasquatch for about 30 seconds, but realizing I was still alive I opened them to see that we were over the terminal building with rows of parked planes beneath us.

After about a minute the pilot came on the intercom and said that a plane had pulled out onto the runway in front of us. He sounded less than pleased. We then made a big loop and landed without incident. It was unsettling to say the least.

Very disturbing video of the collision.

The TCAS would normally give warnings to the crew but below a certain altitude ( 1000 feet on the Airbus ) it doesn’t provide RA’s ( “ level off, level off” or “ climb, climb” or “ descend, descend” type avoidance instructions ) , only TA’s ( traffic alerts ….” Traffic, traffic” but no TCAS commands to avoid ).

If ATC gives conflicting instructions to the pilots, disregard and follow the TCAS.

Too early to tell but I wonder what the TCAS was telling them.

We will find out what happened. I have no doubt about that.

Very sad.
