Well if it's supposed to be -20, you don't even need a cold day, stick it in the freezer and see if it's still good even at 0.

Some call it price gouging, others say it's supply and demand. The cold snap and snow in the eastern 1/2 of the US has had everyone buying more washer fluid.
FTR I keep an eye out all year and buy a bunch of winter fluid when the price is low.
Funny how so many on here stock up on sale priced motor oil but not other fluids.
Well you don't really save that much money by stocking up windshield washer fluid and then you run the risk of it turning into water if enough methanol evaporates because there isn't a tight seal. At the end of the season, they usually have it for 99 cents but that's only if you happen to catch it then. Got 4 gallons once at the end of the season, saved less than $4 vs. the normal. $1.78 at Walmart. Normally I just grab one or two near the end of the season because I don't want to be stuck with summer blend available when I run out in the summer. Now if oil is on clearance at $2 a quart, you're saving $10-$15 a jug so it makes more sense to load up on motor oil when it's on sale. Haven't found any good ones for 0w40 in a long while though.
It doesn’t get terribly cold here near Austin, Texas, but this morning (26-28F) I attempted to melt the frost on the windshield with it. It froze, making things worse. It’s probably best left as a summer fluid. I used to buy cheap Sudafed PE knockoffs at DT, but now i prefer buying slightly expired meds cheaper at Amish/Mennonite-owned salvage grocery stores in Iowa/Missouri during my summer vacation trips.
At least you can use a diluted mix. Up here this time of year it's full strength.
PS: bought some at Home Depot a few weeks back, $1.97 I think.

So I bought Splash -50 RV/Marine potable water stem antifreeze which is on CLEARANCE since its past season.
Ethanol and propylene glycol, it works great and is non-toxic. the Supertech branded RV-Marine AF stuff is no good for some reason for WWF so I would avoid that, Plus the alcohol is denatured on that so no impormptu Pink martinis there !
Be aware this stuff will slush up pretty thick when well below freezing, so not for < 0degF usage as WWF.

Every fall, or even less often, I buy 6 gallons from Costco or Menards. I just grabbed a gallon from the basement since my low fluid light just came on. Same room I keep my 4000 rolls of toilet paper, suckers! 
I think walmart is killing off the loss leaders, for the last few years milk was like a buck a gallon around here and a few weeks ago it's went up to around $3/gal, with ongoing supply chain issues and rising shipping costs, they don't have to bait people into the store with below margin goods.
At our regional but excellent grocery store Market Basket in terms of prices, I spent $2.22 on washer fluid. The prices are amazingly lower on food by large margin and the company makes insane profits.
Walmart plays with pricing but nice a ton of stuff in one spot. I love “the basket” my wife relatives refer to it as. Up until a few years back the only $1 billion company lacking a website.

The new price of the Walmart brand washer fluid is only 10c less than Prestone.
The store brand is good to -30F. Prestone is good to -35F

Correction: the store brand is only good to -25F, while Prestone is good to -34F

We are living in some crazy times. If I was to say why I probably would be knocked off this site. It is my understanding you can make your own washer fluid. I have to look into that and avoid the supply train issue. LOL

Bumping this up because even the cheapest stuff from the local parts store, at our wholesale discount, is now $4.70 a gallon. What the heck
This thread inspired me to look up last night's Kwik Trip transaction. I don't have the receipt, but for 1 gallon of Splash purple and a 20oz Cherry Dr. Pepper (which, BTW, is hands down the most amazing soda ever) my total came to $7.48. MN has around an 8% sales tax, so assuming the soda was $2.29, the washer fluid cost me over $5 after tax.
Does anyone really worry about this? I use probably 2 gallons a year so if the price goes up a dollar or two it's not a big deal.
