Was Your Dad or Granddad a Believer in Non-Detergent Motor Oil?

Do you have any idea what the reasoning was behind the non-detergent oil recommendation for the tractor?
I have heard the belief that the detergents don’t lubricate as well as the oil the detergents are added to. I’ve heard people say Dino oil lubricates better than synthetic oil also.
Maybe so, but I’m running modern oil.

I was born in 1957, and remember helping my father do oil changes on a few different family cars, but particularly on the '68 C10 pickup. The only discussion I recall having with my father about motor oil, was his skepticism towards multi viscosity motor oils, which were still fairly new at the time. So my father always used the same motor oil, Havoline HD 20.

My dad (1930-2010) kept a case of ND oil for his 1953 IH Super C tractor on the belief it was specified to run with a ND oil. I have no idea if that was actually correct but it was still running when he bought a modern diesel tractor in 2003.
