Warn or stretched timing chain symptoms

Talking about the 06 Altima? Feeling down on torque is one symptom.
I think that one will wear through the plastic on the tensioner.

A lengthening duration of startup rattle is one, or ongoing rattle from the valve train.

Typically you have to take off the timing cover to see how many teeth the ratchet has taken up, or to see if a slipper block has been worn away.

What makes you suspect ?

Yes it's the 06 Altima 2.5 S.172k. It does have a startup rattle and ticks for a bit till it warms up. Don't know what the maintenance was prior but the past 2 oil changes have been Mobil 1 5w30.

You could rock the crank back and forth to see if the cam follows. On some engines the slack side chain tensioner won’t hold a lot of tension. So this is not a perfect test. But if there is no slack you’ll know And it’s prob not loose.

A stretched timing chain will cause the timing marking to be offset. If the TDC marking on the crank pulley is spot on, you are likely to see the cam markings to be a little bit off. Problem is how much fabrication tolerances the car manufacturers allow. Some are "Off" a little bit from the factory.
And you could tell it by how far the chain tensioner is out.

Some manufacturers give you the data how to meassure the chain lenght over some chain links to check if the chain is worn. Check your workshop manual. You maybe find this data.

Rattle while start up with a hydraulic cam chain tensioner is mostly a sign of a old, worn chain tensioner.

Had explained this in a different forum, where most members dont have a basic clue abuot Engines and mechanics. As allways, nobody belived me. One guy changed the chain just to post afterwards that is was unneceessary.... ;)

So if the TDC mark is offset by a worn or stretched chain the the engine may have to turn over and over and over again before the camshaft and or crankshaft sensors allow the engine to start?

If you can pull the timing cover you can check the chain to see if it has any slack.

Definitely would rattle on start up. As far as sounding like a box of coins, that could be a lot of things not always associated with the timing chain.

Off my code reader. Not sure if anything here is helpful
