What are the symptoms of a timing chain that's on its way out? Is there any diagnosis I can do?
So if the TDC mark is offset by a worn or stretched chain the the engine may have to turn over and over and over again before the camshaft and or crankshaft sensors allow the engine to start?A stretched timing chain will cause the timing marking to be offset. If the TDC marking on the crank pulley is spot on, you are likely to see the cam markings to be a little bit off. Problem is how much fabrication tolerances the car manufacturers allow. Some are "Off" a little bit from the factory.
And you could tell it by how far the chain tensioner is out.
Some manufacturers give you the data how to meassure the chain lenght over some chain links to check if the chain is worn. Check your workshop manual. You maybe find this data.
Rattle while start up with a hydraulic cam chain tensioner is mostly a sign of a old, worn chain tensioner.
Had explained this in a different forum, where most members dont have a basic clue abuot Engines and mechanics. As allways, nobody belived me. One guy changed the chain just to post afterwards that is was unneceessary....![]()
I have a code reader that can scan live data. Which parameter am I looking for I'll do it right nowCheck camshaft deviation with scan tool
