Hello all, I tried to search for information but didn't find much...Here's the thing, I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado 5.3 that has 177K on the clock but runs fine and doesn't burn oil between changes...I have been using GC 0w30 for years but AutoZone quit selling it and went to GC 0w40 which I wanted to try but they have since quit stocking that anymore...My local Walmart has a 5 qt jug of M1 0w40 for $24.00 and my thoughts were to get a 5 qt jug and mix in 1 qt of M1 5w30-EP to thin it down a bit and for the extra add pack...The question I have is M1 0w40 too thick for my truck which calls for 5w30 and will I hurt it using the M1 0w40 year round in Atlanta Ga with winters in the low 20s and summers 95+... As always, thanks

Tim

The truth is no. It will not hurt anything. It will also save you money at the walmart price

I wouldn't run an oil that heavy straight.
I'd cut it 50/50 with a 0W-20 to give you a heavier higher VI 0W-30 than Mobil's own 0W-30.
My choice in a 0W-20 would be the Mobil made Toyota brand 0W-20 although you could also use M1 AFE 0W-20.

why not, it won't cause any problems down to -40C ?

If you've preferred GC for this vehicle, then M1 0W-40 is a good replacement.
It has very similar HTHS viscosity and is also a very good oil in general.
There is no need to thin the oil down with an inferior M1 product.
M1 0W-40 is as good as it gets in oil of the brand.
Give it a try and see what you think.

Going THINNER would be a poor idea.

But using M1 0w-40 would be OK. I think a better choice is M1 10w-40 High Mileage. Robust, fewer VIIs than the Ow - which you completely do not need. HM additives for wear and seal condition.

Win-win for someone in a warm climate. I run the M1 10w-30 HM in her lexus and the 10w-40 HM in my SUV and both vehicles love them.

It will work well, especially being in GA. It's a thin 40, so it's not much thicker than what you had previously been using.

I put 0w40 in my Ford 5.4 which calls for 5w20. Runs Great, gas mileage is great. No issues. This whole oil grade thing is totally out of hand. Won't hurt a thing. You probably won't even notice.

That oil is overkill for that engine.
That being said, you can use it with confidence. Mobil1 just updated their formulation. It is GTL based. HTHS is lowered to 3.6 (OW30 GC is 3.58cp) and cst is 12.6 (borderline W30).
As for winter use, it has really good numbers.

I hope Georgia never gets close to that cold.

Yeah really. . it can get all time cold like near 0°F all the way down into along the state line with Florida and below 0 in Macon and Atlanta. January 20th 1985 it hit those numbers in Georgia. Here in SE Va we got down to -12F. All time coldest in Richmond and where I was at East of there. I remember Christmas Eve of 1983 and a very strong Arctic front passed through. Was it mid 40s at 2 or 3 pm. Very very strong winds, rain changed to snow almost instantly. Only lasted about 30 min. By 5 pm it was 18°F. Got up Christmas am and asked my mom how cold it was outside. -3F. I didn't think we would see it get even colder than that just over a year later.

It's a fine choice, I'm running the older LL 01 Mobil 1 0W40 in my 3.1 GM motor and I haven't noticed any difference between it and the synthetic 5w30 like Pennzoil Platinum I was using before.

I may continue to use the new FS 0w40 as well even though it's not ll 01 any longer
