The majority of the items sold at Walmart are identical to what you would find at the grocery store, Target, Walgreens, CVS, online, etc. Please substantiate your claim that the stuff at Walmart are inferior with some evidence.

Some clothing branded the same is absolute junk vs what is sold at retail stores.we have thrown away Walmart stuff. Carters brand is an example.

Ortega taco shells cost half at Walmart and are fragile. UPC is different which is tip off.

Don't like it? Don't shop there. Seriously, Americans are addicted to low prices. We buy a lot of stuff we don't need just because it seems cheap. We need to be satisfied with less stuff, but of higher quality. How many of you complain about Wal Mart but still buy there? Also, it's not a matter of total boycott. Tailor your shopping habits a bit. Look a little closer at what you are buying. The fine-tuned metrics that Walmart collects will reflect your choices. Too many Americans complain, complain, complain yet do NOTHING to affect change. Your money is what they want. Your money is your vote. Use it in a way that reflects your beliefs. The griping will do nothing.

It's also been proven that Walmart's prices are often not the cheapest at all. You have to watch as they can be quite expensive compared to other stores. But they sure like to pepetrate that myth.

I don't care for the policies, practices, and clientelle of Wal Mart so I tend to stay away. That's the best we can do - vote with our wallets.

Correct - that is the best you can do aside from active protesting, letter writing, commenting on web sites, etc. But, in the end, we all vote with our wallets. And, it does appear that "we" overwhelmingly must approve of Wal Mart's business practices.

If the autoparts chains would have decent prices, oil that's not covered in dust and in leaky bottles, and actually give an iota of customer service,I'd be inclined to give them my hard earned money. Last time I attempted to shop at one of the chains, the clerks were more interested in chillin with their friends who were in there loitering, ignored the customers in the store, and refused to help them.

I drove to Walmart, the clerk asked me what I needed, went and got it off the shelf for me,double bagged it,and was extremely polite and professional.

HUGE thumbs up for Walmart.

Must be different in TX. My experience is the exact opposite in terms of service... And when there is a deal, great prices on oil at the parts stores too...

No kidding totally opposite here. There's almost zero customer service at Walmart once you get into the store and away from the customer service desk that always has a line and is not really service anyway. I've waited 15-20 mins one time at Walmart for an employee to be summoned to assist me with a mundane issue. I have zero expectation to make a purchase in a timely manner or to get any customer assistance at Walmart. So I don't have really have a problem with not ever getting that from Walmart. My issue is with Walmaart building so many stores and some many people shopping there they displaces competitors like Target, Meijer etc from moving in the area.

Meijers is great. They have way better quality produce and meat, and more selection. Their prices are about the same as Walmart and lower with regular sales. They still have a bigger automotive section than Walmart. What irks me is a Walmart supercenter was built close by and the Meijer's closed. So I'd have to go 15 miles+ further round trip to go to Meijers instead. And I live in town. That's not convenient time wise or fuel usage wise.

If Walmart wasn't taking over the convenient locations or I had a convenient alternative, then Walmart wouldn't have as much effect. The truth is Walmart has various effects on the other big discount retailers. Meijer doesn't have quiet the selection and variety since Walmart rolled out of the small towns into the city for example.

Not only that, but they cost less!

Seriously though, I have walked out of Autozones for their HORRIBLE (meaning 6 people ar standing around and the THREE employees are just walking around looking at them) "Customer service."

By the way.. any fall-out from that Autozone thing with the guy from the military?

I used to live by a Meijer. Like a low-price Target. Not TOO too impressed with Meijer.

That said, I like Target very well... Meijer's was always kinda "ok." Like a National Wholesale Liquidators.. They SEEM ok, but you'd rather shop somewhere else, IMHO!

Few of those other things will make a difference. Companies are only interested in the bottom line. Those protests at Walmart over Black Friday did nothing to their sales. And it probably did nothing to long term sales or policies at WM.

Few companies actually care - they try to put out the fire and move on. Sometimes if the company actually cares (Nike and Apple come to mind) they may change their policies to be "better corporate citizens".

The best thing to do is vote with your wallet. Get enough people to do that and it will make a difference. Other than that other stuff makes you feel good but rarely leads to long term results.

In my town, one of the main roads originally had Walmart in the mall at the top of the street, directly across from an Esso, and in the same plaza as an A&P grocer, the LCBO....etc.

Further down the street by maybe a block was a large, and relatively new Canadian Tire store.

Walmart bought the block of property BELOW the Canadian tire store, and put in one of those "Mega" Walmarts that they later expanded with the full-on grocery centre as part of it. And of course it has an integrated McDonalds like most of them.

It is quite obvious what their intentions were there.

Then the Zellers in the downtown core was closed, Walmart bought the spot (it also has a grocery store next to it) and so now our town of ~100,000 people has two freakin' Walmart stores . And forgive me for my stereotype, but it isn't uncommon to see your typical welfare momma walking down from her housing project (which the first Walmart is built conveniently near two of them) in her pajama's to shop 'til she drops on my dole. YAY!!!

One or a few people doing these things won't make much difference. You are right. If everyone, or at least a majority, of people who had issues did something about it perhaps WM would take notice. But, we are a lazy and apathetic lot. The fact that we keep electing incumbents from the two major parties we profess to hate proves that statement again and again. Therefore, all you can do - for your own peace of mind - is not give those merchants your money. We're not much into exercising our democratic rights these days. In fact, we're not much into any sort of exercise. LOL

Here's a novel idea...how about if the automotive places dropped their oil prices down to a more reasonable level? The last time I priced oil at those places there wasn't a single brand of oil, not even the no name store brand, that could be had for less than $5 a qt. Prices that high are ridiculous and totally unnecessary...

Yeah Walmart doesn't just put out the "ma and pa" little stores and small autoparts stores. They put out large grocers and even large discount chains like Target and Meijer types in some areas. Walmart puts their supercenters up like McDonalds on every corner in their quest to monopolize the retail market. Only government foodstamps and welfare can keep the model going because Walmart sure doesn't create any wealth in the community lol.

^^Exactly. And if they'd employ people who actually gave customer service instead of being rude and just having their friends hang out and play there,I'd actually spend my money there. I really hope these chains go belly up.

I agree with aquaricsm, if the autozone, advance, and sears and others would clean house and lower the price of ANY oil to even close to say the Super Tech oil at wal mart, their sales probably would increase some.

Just my thought

First of all, I don't know which area are you in, but right here everyone sells 5.1qt or 5+ qt jug to get around the direct competition with Walmart's exclusiveness of 5qt jug.

And right here Walmart is not the cheapest or the most popular, there are Target and all sorts of stores that are more specialized and have regular sales that Walmart doesn't do. I stopped shopping at Walmart because of that reason, and I don't see Target being any better other than not being as big and have a higher price / quality inventory.
