Walmart Super Tech - has it been discontinued?

This is the first I've heard of a shortage. It seems there's a shortage of everything these days. What's the supposed cause of the motor oil shortage? Does big oil want to do even more price gouging?

Edit: Long story short, stock up. I don't think it's unreasonable at all to be stocked up for the rest of 2026 and all of 2027. Best time to stock up would have been two months ago, second best time is right now. Whatever pricing you don't like right now, expect it to get much worse.

I was half frustrated after I cleared out all my local autozones for the Valvoline hybrid 0w20 @ $15 each. It was a good not great deal on a good oil. Now I'm happy I did. I can weather the storm and use up all this cheap oil, even if I'd rather be putting 0w30 or 5w30 in my Tacoma.

Iran struck the Pearl GTL plant in Qatar, so that supply of Grp III basestock is offline for at least a year.
The Korean refineries which were also a significant source of Grp III basestock have switched their operations to more fuel from their limited crude supplies, so that source is also severely constrained and will be for months.
There are some here who simply buy motor oil as they need it for a change and keep none on hand.
That works just fine until it doesn't.

One more reason to get out of the world market and go back producing what we need ourselves...
That is a very short-sighted outlook and opinion. If all the other countries in the world were to do this, places like China and Africa could essentially shut the world down. The US can not produce everything they need to be sustainable, it is a world market we live in, like it or not.

Absolutely. I bought a 3-year supply with oil on rebate, and then some from Costco, with the receipts taped to the jugs. If we don't have an oilmegaddon I can return the Kirkland oil to costco. If prices never rise, I'll still make out from rebates.

We all could probably go a couple thousand miles longer on a OCI and our engine would never notice. I say that as someone who's stomach hurts if I go past 5000 miles, especially in my Sienna, where the oil level grows in the winter time.

Probably just Walmart being Walmart. They can't keep a steady stock of anything to save their lives.
...especially Wrangler jeans in 44X32.

Just checked online, and most ST products are on the shelf/available for pickup at my local Walmart. Prices have trended upward on some things.

My local Family Farm & Home has all the usual Mag1 (same stuff as ST) offerings in stock--no price increases, either.

I have 4 cars I maintain, but the Kia only gets changed once a year. It’s not driven much. The other 3 every 5K. I have a dozen 5 quart jugs, so should hopefully be good for a couple years anyway. Just got some Mobil 1 Advanced clean for $25 each. Grabbed two. Never really hoarded oil much, but seems like a good time to at least have a few changes in the bank.

Comparative advantage. We're all better off with open exchange. Trying to DIY everything just makes costs higher and everyone comes out poorer.
It also makes us dependent on less secure sources. There are trade-offs. When the less secure source is compromised, the increase in cost and/or scarcity can more than wipe out the savings from open exchange.

It´s not a simple equation, but for strategic commodities and products, like oil and microchips, I fall on the secure side of self sufficiency.

Just my opinion.

We all have repeatedly seen why being in the world market is a bad thing. Go back 50 or 60 years to when everything we consumed was produced in this country. We didn't have these problems then...

Why would anyone buy oil with such plain labels and branding, anyway? I want my warm fuzzies! ;)
Because all oils, regardless of brand, is made by one of the major companies anyway...all you're getting with the boutique brands is poorer...

Unless one has a turbo...mine gets changed religiously at 5K...

We made ALL of our own stuff 50-60 years ago, and we never had ANY of these problems...this is what we get when we outsource everything...

Wouldn't make that blanket statement at all. It entirely depends on the individual vehicle and usage case.

Many turbo GDI fuel dilluters shouldn't be going the recommended OCI with their recommended weight oils, much less pushing that out a couple thousand miles. Ironically, newer vehicles might be returning to the 3000 mile oil change.
