I still don’t see how ANYTHING you added has anything to do with the question asked. All you did was rant about lower quality oils. Please share with us the smell/quality correlation? What are the top tier oils you just know are quality when you break that seal and get a whiff of that sweet smelling MSDS verified 25-50% PAO base? This ain’t wine sampling, it’s a bunch of hazardous materials blended together. The answer is one or more of those materials or in combination has a subjective unpleasant aroma to him. We didn’t blend it and we don’t know anything more.

I would agree. I merely made an offhand remark about it in post #4 while posting another thread that also talked about the smell. I had no intention of going on and on about it but user @Hall misinterpreted that and took it personally I guess.

All I know is that it smelled really bad. I first helped dad change oil in like 1979 so I have been smelling motor oil, gear lube and atf for a long time now. I had not smelled anything that smelled like this in decades.

Anyone that has used premium boutique gear lubes vs old school gear lube knows what I mean. The old cheap tech smells far different and stronger than the newer premium technology gear lubes. Like Redline and some Ravenol gear lubes you can barley smell any sulfur or phosphurous but crack open something like Coastal 140WT and you can smell it a block and half away inside of seconds of breaking the seal. It was that level of nigh and day difference.

I once had a Carhart chore coat back when they where still made in America. I got some old school GL5 gear lube on it and I swear 47 washes latter it still smelled like gear lube. Even washing it in a gallon of Castrol Super Clean in Hot water with a 12 hour soak did not phase it. That chore coat stayed in the basement for like 10 years and anytime anyone had anything filthy to wash it automaticly got washed.

It was the 5W30 Walmart Super-Tech 20K miles Full Synthetic Dexos-1 product. If the foil seal had been broken I would have taken it back. I use Super Tech 10W30 conventional oil in my push lawn mower and it has not smelled that strong.

I know I am leaving a bunch off but that is a lot remeber. No one has ever asked me this. I forgot to add Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30!

Now if you asked me what I have used the most the last 20 years it would be mostly what I can purchase at Walmart off the shelf. That said probably most of that 20 years I would purchse 2-3 different MTL's, ATF's and Oil every year from Boutique Suppliers and from the internet.

M1 0W40 and 5W30 are go to oils for me. If PP/PUP or any other name brand synthetic is on sale though I might switch brands. If something is on clearance I am all over it. I got Mannol Ester Plus for $12 a gallon on clearance from Amazon. I got Delvac Extreme 10W30 for $11 a gallon from NAPA, 2 years ago I think it was I got S-Oil Seven Gold 5W30 for $9 a gallon again clearance from Amazon.

So while I keep comming back to Mobil-1 since 1988 I am all over the map. If it intersts me or is on clearance I am going to try it! I have not used a Fram oil filter for instance for over 20 years but I just go some from RockAuto on clearance for $1.50 each so I got 14 of them.

Value brands are a value for a reason. They meet the need that is asked of them and no more, as cheaply as possible.. In this case, it meets the specs listed on the back of the bottle and nothing more.

As per the thread I posted, if you read it, others have noticed the odd smell of SuperTech oils. Does Kirkland and Amazon Basics smell the same? They are all Warren Distro oils.

Kirkland doesn’t smell bad. I just used some.
