Walmart oil prices - Ah!

Oil changes at dealer are rarely designed to be money makers. They usually give discounted prices for oil changes hoping to find other items they can sell you.
My Subaru dealer charges $120 for an oil change with a coupon. That's a lot in my opinion especially when I was getting oil for $30 or less with rebate and buying filters in bulk. At one point, I was paying maybe $20 for an oil change doing it myself. I am assuming they pay even less for oil and filters than I do. Just my opinion though.

This is definitely true at the Toyota dealers near me. I think it’s $80 for the 4Runner. Ram, on the other hand, wanted $145 to change the oil in my Hemi truck. My buddy’s Cummins was over $500 for a full compliment of fuel and oil filters, oil, and a rotate and balance.

Its a lot compared to DIy, but from business point of view there is not much profit in it. They have to pay mechanic, they also need him to look over other things besides oil, the car is on the lift, they need to pay for rent, insurance and etc. I bet after all is factored in, they maybe make $30 profit on it.

The quick oil change places like Jiffy lube has a lot more profit per oil change

I agree there likely not making money. But here its $85 and they use lube jockeys not licensed techs. They also tend to screw things up so $120 if its actually a tech would probably be worth it.

I went to the Toyota dealer when mine were "free" which was the first 5 years - SE Toyota forces the platinum plan on everyone. The upsell stuff they try to pull, and did pull on others I observed, was funny and sad all at once.

BMW North America has been running an oil change deal for several years...currently priced at $249 for three years (they started the program 6 years ago at $199). The change is based on the oil life monitor, which means a minimum of annual changes even if parked, and if you drive a lot, could be two or three a year.

I still do my own, but on this V8 that takes 10 quarts, even on BMW's "special" they usually charge $179.99. So the $249 deal for three years is a "no brainer" bargain for those that don't want to change it themselves.

I can do my own change with the oil of my preference for around $80. Two jugs of Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 LL-04 and a factory BMW (Mahle) oil filter.

Agreed, labor and overhead...around here the Toyota dealer charges $200+ an hour, and the BMW dealer charges $280.

Awhile back it was $700 CAD and change for Jiffy Lube to perform an oil change and fuel filters on one of the company diesel Rams and that was before price increases. It costs me around $300 in parts for Rotella and OEM filters. This is in Alberta

was at the local Walmart today and saw they had Castrol ep edge 5w-30 for still $25.97, was going to grab some but have a healthy inventory of PUP, though its a steal for a good oil, get it while you can.

So which oil is having best price and where to buy to stock up now every one ?
Walmart still has Castrol edge on sale for $23.97.

I bought 5qt jug of mobil 1 advanced clean 0w20 for the Mrs around the beginning of the month while it was on sale so she has oil for her next change on her Crosstrek. Week later I went to see if was still on sale, and as soon as I seen the price, I decided to get whatever was on sale at the time which Castrol edge was on sale still. So I got a 5qt 0w20 for myself. And this week I decided to get 2 more 5qt jugs as it was still at that price. So we got enough for 2 changes each

I'm looking at a 5 year window based on reserch for storage and I'm betting like most, have overbought a bit so the plan is say in year two or three, a group 3 refinery gets up at full production, I'll list the projected extra jugs I won't use up by year 5 on say marketplace at pre hike prices so it can benifit some other dyi'r and it doesn't go past the 5 year storage mark because I'm betting when production goes back up, prices won't returt to Janurary 2026 and will be somewhere in between. I get my original price paid of say QS FS at $21 and at year two it's still good oil. I am storing it all in my basement which seems to always hover around a constant 65F. Bad plan?

I think you're giving Wal-Mart too much credit. They are always first to take advantage of the customer by jumping on the price gouging train as early as they can. The Menards, Home Depot, Blains Farm & Fleet around me haven't hiked up prices one bit. Just bought Quaker State FS 5W30 for $20.97 yesterday as my local Menards. It's now $29.97 at Wal-Mart. Both likley still residual stock they purchased several months ago as the box manufacture date is April of 2026. Menards corprate I'm sure sees Wal-Mart's current price increase . Maybe they are just not looking to participate for whatever reasons until they are forced to repurchase at higher prices from the distributer when available.

I love Menards, but just a week behind Walmart, Menards now has QS full syn up from $20.97 to 29.97. Zikes! This is going to be painful for those who ignored the warnings.

As I said before though, even when this is over QS full syn will never be $20.97 again. Ugh.
